1930 Philco Radio

Don't know much about it, it still works, still in great condition. There is a stamp on the inside of the body that says APR 13, 30. Tell me, do I have a gem here or a dud?

answers:
I would say a gem because I love old radios. Monetarily speaking...I paid 75.00 for one very similar if not identical but it didn't work at the time. Yours looks like a very nice radio to me.

It looks like a Philco 96 Lowboy to me, very nice radio, I think 9 tubes with AM only. Looks to be in very nice original condition so I would say gem also.

Seventyfive year old radios in such good original condition are rare! I was lucky to have found a 1931-32 Stromberg-Carlson 29-A in near mint condition, and to me it is a treasure, and a daily player (with a S-C model 69 short wave converter).
If you enjoy it, keep it. If not, I"m sure you will find a happy buyer for such a nice radio. This console is pictured on page 24 of the Ramirez Philco book. It could be either model 77 (7 tubes), or model 96 (9 tubes).

It has the original grill cloth which is rare and irreplacable. That alone makes it a gem in my opinion. It looks identical to my Philco 96 which sadly I have never found a suitable grill cloth for...

Got home and opent the Philco Bible:

This lowboy style cabinet could be one of three Philco models:

A 1930 Model 77
A 1930 Model 96
A 1931 Model 111

(And yes, Terry, that is the original grille cloth for that cabinet!)

The paper sticker on the inside wall of the cabinet will tell you for sure.

All three models highly praised and worth restoring. That date stamp is most likely the cabinet maker's date stamp. It could apply to all three models above.

If there is no model number, count the number of tubes; that will help to identify it.

I dont know if its a preference thing or what but that is a beautiful radio, a fine piece of furniture. I would be proud to own it. Has all that original stuff that antiquers would fall all over themselves for, patina. I know it sounds silly but thats the lingo. I have a very similar but not so sculptured Philco 20 consolette that I would never part with. Its the first radio that I fixed. Bought at an antique store for big dollars. I didnt know any better then. Value is a relative thing. Depends on where when who.

Thank you all for your input. I will take a closer look at it this weekend, and maybe add some more pictures. It actually belongs to my grandfather, and he was thinking about putting it up for auction. He told me that it still works, and sounds great, but it only works for an hour or so at a time. I think one of the vacuum tubes may be bad, or there is a loose connection some place that causes the radio to lose power after it warms up, possibly a copper connector expands and loses contact.

Its a gem. Very nice looking radio, in great condition. I like the lines of Philcos, and buy them when found. I gave three to my kids, and have an 89 in the living room, get a lot of compliments on them.

answers:
That cabinet looks similar to my Atwater Kent 60 made by Red Lion. That's a very nice original radio, I would be proud to have something like that especially since it stayed in the family for so long. I would try to keep it in the family if possible, once it's gone you might be sorry.
