Question
Mornin' everybody. I had beed waiting on payment from a Canadian bidder, assuming it would be a money order, since that was what was stated in my EOA to her.
Well, it came yesterday and lo and behold, it's a check. But I believe it's a bank check and not a personal check. Is there such a thing?
It doesn't have her personal information at the top like a personal check. Just "The Toronto Dominion Bank". Then pay to the order of ME. And in the lower left corner it says "To: Wells Fargo Bank Ohio, N.A.". Then the name of the town in Ohio. Bottom right is her signature and that's the only place on the check her name appears.
But above her signature there are blanks for "Authorized Officer" and next to that "number". These are left blank.
Also the check is in US funds so no conversion is needed I think?
So, Do you think I'd have problems depositing this check in my account? A few years ago I did have a personal Check from a Canadian buyer and had to return it because the bank was going to charge me a humongous processing fee, and on top of that it would take a minimum of 6 weeks to process it.
I'm so far away from my bank since I moved that I can't just run in there and show it to them and they were no help on the phone, of course. And when I called the nearest Wells Fargo Bank they also told me to bring it in so they could see it. That ain't easy right now, either.
Any ideas? I'd appreciate any help I can get.
TIA.
Pat
Answer
Sound like it might be a cashiers check, but without seeing it I can't be sure.
Answer
You're probably right, Memorygarden. On the face of the check it's called a 'document'. And on the back it mentions 'draft'.
And now I see where it says that an 'authorized signature is required for amounts over US $5000.00'. So that's probably why there is no signature other than the buyers.
I just would hate to get to the bank and deposit it and then get hit with the fees.
I've only purchased a couple of cashier's checks in my life and can't remember if they actually say cashier's check on them or not.

Answer
If there's a 9 digit US routing number at the bottom of the check, you should be OK.
Answer
Thanks BJGrolle. There are 3 sets of numbers along the bottom. The middle one is 9 numbers and does look like it might be a routing number.
I need to find out all I can about it because it's an hour's haul one way into Houston to my bank. (the way I drive.....NO freeways. LOL)

Answer
It's a bank money order. I used to get buy them all the time from the Toronto-Dominion bank to pay for eBay items from U.S. sellers.
You're fine as payment is honored by Wells Fargo bank in the U.S who acts on behalf of the Canadian bank.
Answer
bank draft = bank money order

I know what you mean about people being no help on the phone. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif But try reading the 9 digit number to them and they should be able to tell you whether it's a US bank routing number. If they can't...sheesh! http://community.here.com/infopop/em...n_rolleyes.gif
Answer
If you want to confirm it's a routing number, just go to the fedwiredirectory and type in the number. It will confirm it's a routing number and even give you additional information on the bank it's assigned to. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
