PayPal weirdness

Question
I won an auction this evening and paid with PP. I tried to pay the invoice the seller sent me, but had to go to the PP website instead. Here's the message I got when I clicked on ebay's "Pay with PP" button from the auction page ...

You have entered unsupported characters such as é. Only German and US characters are currently supported. Please use alternatives like e, then try again.

The button you have just pressed is invalid.

What the heck is up with that?! I even deleted all cookies, history and temp files and tried again, no go.

I had a similar problem with PayPal several days ago. I won three auctions from the same seller. Clicked the PayPal button in one auction - it correctly combined everything from all three auctions. Fine so far. Then, in the next step, it told me one of the three auction numbers was invalid!!
They were the right auction numbers and PayPal had found them itself. Duh!!
