Question
After relocating, the space I have to work with for inventory is about a fourth of what I had. I'm curious to know what some of you use to store your stuff.
My thought is to use vertical space more. Either stacking shelves or stacking drawers. I think shelves more flexibility in terms of what you can store, but I also like drawers because of their enclosed nature.
Any thoughts?

Answer
I use shelves, lots of shelves! 7 foot tall and 4 foot wide and adjustable shelves. I also use 21 gal plastic containers with lids. I really like those better than the shelves except that you have to take everything off to get to one not on top.
My solution ultimately is to build the storage I need beginning with a 16 x 12 barn I'm building this spring.

Shelves are definitely the way to go.
Answer
> adjustable shelves
When you say adjustable, do you have metal shelves or wooden shelves? Do you use pegs that go underneath the shelf for flexible heights? So far, I'm finding shelves with a depth of at least 12 inches (possibly more) is working for me.

Shelves on wheels. YOu can pack more in.
If you have the room, then fixed shelves.
Answer
shelves, oodles of them, mine are a full 8 foot high with two feet on top, my office has 10 foot ceilings, way cool, I can pack in more STUFF...
and boxes, bins, drawers baskets, filing cabinets, any thing that holds STUFF.....label it all so you know whats in it, saves a lot of rooting around later.

Costco have the ones they used in restaurant kitchens. These are 6 shelve units in chome looking steel. Each shelf is rated for 600 pounds.
The units are deep and ideal for most boxes. You can adjust the height of the shelves. They can wheel, but I do not recommend a normal practice of wheeling them around. More like to move them a couple of feet so you can get at something else. Fully loaded, quite heavy.
Costco also gives you an extra set of 4 wheels. These wheels are massive. You can make 2 units of 3 shelve units on wheels. The 6 shelves are close to 6 feet in height.
The cost is very reasonable, around $75. The shelves are heavy and weights about 125 pounds in the box. You might need some help and definitely a van or pickup to get them. If not, you can unbox them in the parking lot and load the shelves into a car.
Just be careful of the depth. Not sure what your inventory look like. But, they are quite deep which is why I like them.

These also work pretty good:

However, they are not for real heavy stuff. More like medium weight boxes. They are much easier to wheel.
If you get one, go to ebates.com There is a link for $20 off on $75 purchase. You can get some mailing supplies or whatever.
This unit takes about an hour or so to assemble. The Costco unit about half hour but helpful to have two people as the shelves are bulky and heavy.

I think mine are called gatorshelves? bought them at sams club. They are very strong, don't remember what they were rated but several hundred pounds. They have a metal structure and the metal frame has holes in it to adjust the shelves (takes a hammer and earplugs to get them out of the holes). They are 18 inches deep, may be too deep for what you need but I need that extra space. Plus I put them back to back for a double layer accessible from both sides.
Here is a pic, hope this link works:

Think I'll have to check into those ones on the rollers at costco, sounds good. These were only $50 from sams club. commentary, how deep are those shelves?
