Question
and can you give me some idea of comparison between how it runs on both?
I know I've asked this question before, I hope someone can give me some comparison between how ebay will run on the two.
What I'd like to get is opinions on how much more dsl or cable is worth to get vs. isdn. I have asked my bil this question but he is a programmer by trade and has used isdn and has dsl at his house but didn't/couldn't give any opinion on how the internet runs on isdn as a general comparison.
I have posted before I am planning on adding an addition to my house for ebay, over 1000 sq ft.
Well, *accidentally* got to talking to a local realtor and according to them because of the very high number of repos in this area, it's a buyers market. And after comparing numbers with them, it looks like I could buy a 3br/2ba/2 car garage for not much more than it would cost to add on to this house (and maybe even less). And without all the work.
I live in a rural area though only 4 miles outside of a pretty large (to me) town of over 20k. I'm a country girl http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif but will consider moving in town ONLY for the benefit of cable or dsl which I could get.
There is a house I am looking at in a rural subdivision though that would be a good compromise for me I think, a couple of miles outside of town and still have a cornfield as my back property line and a 70s subdivision so lots are twice as wide and long as they are in town. But, no cable or dsl.
Living a rural life is important to me and moving into any subdivision is giving up something. I would give up the least at this semi-rural subdivision (plus be within walking distance of my parents). The houses in a new subdivision in town would run comparable prices if considering some repairs this older home needs, but like I said the lots are half the size or less and completely in town, down town.
to make a decision, I think I need to come up with an idea of just how much better cable is than isdn ON EBAY. I could care less about the rest of the internet as I spend 99.9% of my time on ebay or googling doing research. Will I be able to be only slightly less productive with isdn over cable/dsl (both are available in town), will there be a significant increase in productivity with cable? I'm trying to decide on some figure as a percentage of monthly income. Say with cable if I can make 25% more profit a month, that has to be figured at least into the price/mortgage of the house. Then I can decide at what point would it be worth it to me personally to give up my rural life to move in town or choose the compromise of a rural subdivision with no cable.
Thank you all for your thoughts, seems like hardly anyone uses isdn here, it's dialup, satellite or cable/dsl. Which makes me wonder in and of itself if it's not a good thing.
and as an aside note, is this happening in other areas as well? The high repo rate of new homes (mostly) and a buyers market? From talking to this realtor, she considers it to be such a buyers market that she recommmends REALLY lowballing any repoed house, 25% or more less than what they are asking (and most are already at considerably less than new but only 3 years or so old). Just curious! It's been a sellers market in this area for quite awhile, especially with the low interest rates.

Answer
I've used it with both Cable and DSL, but really the difference is only how fast the Cable or DSL you have access to is...
My DSL ran at around 700-800 Kbps
My Cable runs at 2300 - 3000 Kbps
But some cable is slower, and some DSL is faster...

Greetings Mels:
I used to be on ISDN in the dark ages. When cable came it was the hottest thing running in the area. I had a DSL line that I used as a back up and could tell it was somewhat slower but if you are comparing any of these options to dialup they blow dialup away.
We recently went to Directv and I looked into their satellite connection. On the Directv site they'll compare you current speed to what they could give you and my comsux....er...comcast connection (which I think sucks) is much better than the one offered through Directv.
I don't have numbers like toyranch though; only my perception.
Good luck!

thanks to you both for your thoughts!
Toy,
I've asked the ppl on dslreports.com about isdn vs satellite and been told from their experience I would be better off with isdn (this was asking both the isdn and satellite forums). course the guys there pretty much say satellite is a last resort.
It looks like that from what you two say that I need to find out what the typical speeds are in my area. Looking at charts in general I saw it should be 512 kbps to 20 mpbs for cable and 128 kbps to 8 mbps for dsl. I've been told isdn will be a steady 128 kpbs up and down.
One thing about this semi rural house is that PROBABLY cable or dsl is very close, maybe a couple of years or so maybe longer but there is a subdivision about 2 miles away with cable/dsl but it is on the other side of an interstate and it hasn't been brought on this side yet. I'd have to sign a two year contract for isdn or pay a $200 installation fee but maybe about the time it expired I could get dsl. And I think once the 2 year contract is up I can go month to month for isdn and cancel at any time.

I also keep reading on these boards and the ebay boards alot of posts where ppl say the ebay site doesn't run much faster on their broadband than on dialup (because of all the changes ebay is making etc).
is this still true or was it just last fall while they were making so many changes?
Thanks again!

I went from AOL to cable 2 years ago and I love it. I still have AOL on the laptop which I have to use for SAPro and I hate it. I guess I will have to get a router so I can use my cable on both. Thankfully I only have to turn on AOL when uploading the ads.
As far as navigating on Ebay, I never ever do anything except shop on the Ebay site. I have never tried to list on their site as I found it too slow and cumbersome years ago and can't even begin to think about trying to use it now.
I had to install SAPro on my laptop and the download was going to be over an hour. I just downloaded it on the desktop with cable in less than 3 minutes and then used the cd I made to install it on my laptop.
I did try the seller's manager they offer, but I like My Ebay to look like it used to look so I cancelled. I only use it to keep up with my watch list.

lindajean,
how does your listing program run on ebay now especially compared to the laptop?
I use sold so the only thing I do directly on the ebay site is research.
Answer
eBay's search, for instance, won't work any faster on broadband than it will on dialup. That is dependent on their servers and their processing speed. Pages load a WHOLE lot faster. Pics load a WHOLE lot faster.
