Question
Just won an auction, the seller accepts personal checks, MO/cashier checks or PayPal ...stated as such in the auction. I paid with PP, so no biggie, but I'm curious, why does it tell me this:

Confirm payment method
Your seller only accepts PayPal as a payment method, so you can pay easily with a credit card or bank account -- free.

Answer
G'day Karen,
Where do you get the message that the buyer ONLY accepts PayPal?
Kind Regards, Kevin
Answer
Kevin, I was paying for an auction - that statement is on the first page after clicking the "pay now" button. I also noticed it a couple of nights ago on another auction I won. That auction had other payment options besides PP too.
I'm going to be bidding on another PP auction in about 10 mins. They also have other payment options besides PP ...will let you know if it has it too.

OK, Won that auction too and it DID NOT say that the seller only accepts PP. Maybe this is something sellers have to opt OUT of and don't know it/aren't doing it?!

Answer
Did the auction have the pay NOW with paypal button on the BIN??
When you list those kinds of auctions you can only check the paypal box for payment even if you are willing to accept other payments if the item is not binned. So you have to put it in your text that you will accept other payments.

I don't know whether this is the reason or not, but perhaps it has something to do with the "Pay Pal Preferred" program. In order to get the cash back bonus when using the Pay Pal credit card, sellers must have selected the Pay Pal Preferred icon somewhere either on ebay or Pay Pal.
When I received notice from Pay Pal of this a few months ago, noone from Pay Pal or ebay was able to tell me what this preference would look like to buyers. The notice also informed me that my Pay Pal account would default to Pay Pal Preferred on a specific date. When I called Pay Pal, a very nice and helpful representative showed me how to unchoose this
so-called feature. Even though I followed his instructions carefully, the change wouldn't stick. The rep said he would follow-up with the technical people and get back to me, which he actually did. A tech emailed to say that I basically should get over it until they had a chance to fix the problem, even though the "Preferred" (in some form that noone could describe) had taken effect.
I was rather unhappy with this answer, since Pay Pal had made changes to my account without my permission, couldn't explain what the changes meant and then wouldn't let me restore my account to the way it was before the changes were made by them. So, I emailed Meg at ebay, asking her whether the tech's response was an acceptable business practice. I received a telephone call from an ebay person within a day, with a Pay Pal tech conferenced into the call. The ebay person was conciliatory and eager to help. The Pay Pal person obviously was unhappy to be participating. He kept insisting that this was a benefit to me.
I have digressed. Could the message you have been receiving have something to do with this Pay Pal Preferred program? I don't use ebay's Checkout system and my communications with buyers are rather clear that Pay Pal is only one of the payment methods that I will accept.

These were regular auctions, no BIN. They did have the "Pay Now" button though.

Even if I ever had it proven to me that it would HELP my auctions; the way payOLApal just "does stuff" is enough to make me far too leery to ever "pet the cobra"..."antivirin with me" or not! http://community.here.com/3/ws/emoticons/nono.gif

Answer
Ken, I don't use PP for my auctions either, but I do pay with the service. (Totally separate bank/account from my household account, I take no chances with PP.)
Last time I did use PP in my auctions, everyone sent checks.
