Question
If I do an auction where, "high bidder gets to choose small, medium or large", do I put 1 or 3 in the quantity box? I have 3, but the high bidder is going to get one, their choice of size. I do not want to do a dutch auction, I want to do the choice thing.
Thanks!
Answer
You are selling one, so the qty is only one. They have a choice of sizes, but the auction is still for only one item.
You can have a Dutch auction then you can have a qty of 3, but say in the auction that the 1st winner gets 1st choice of size, the 2nd winner gets to chose from the remaining 2 and the last bidder gets what's left.
Answer
I thought eBay does not allow choice auctions. Are there exceptions for clothing?
Answer
I thought I read somewhere that they recently started allowing choice auctions??? Heck I dunno, I've never did one before.

Choice Listings
A choice listing occurs when a seller allows buyers to choose from a selection of items. Choice listings can be problematic because of the potential for fee circumvention, transactions outside of eBay and other issues.
Choice listings are generally not allowed and will be ended. The Insertion Fee will be automatically credited for that listing. See also the policy related to choice travel certificates.
Exceptions:
Listings may offer custom-made items or services that are created or customized to the buyer's specification such as made to order clothing. Other permitted examples include re-sizing of rings or personalized mailing labels. All offered options must be provided at no additional charge to the buyer. Choice of title in software, books, music or movies is not allowed. Choice of size in pre-made items is not allowed.
Multiple quantity listings (Multiple Item Auction, multiple-item fixed price or store) may offer a choice of color in otherwise identical items. However, the seller must be able to fulfill the entire quantity of every listing in any offered color even if every winning bidder makes exactly the same color selection. It is not permissible to state "The highest bidder gets first choice." Choice listings may not be offered "subject to availability" or request the buyer to contact the seller to see which colors are available or what quantity is available. This exception for choice of color does not apply to single quantity listings.

Answer
Edited out as lorra15433 already found the rule.
What some people do is put something like this in their auction:
"This auction is for a size small. Due to ebay rules not allowing size choicing, if you wish a different size, then email us and we will put an auction up for you"
I was told on the phone by ebay that this is allowed.
Many people won't bother asking for a new auction. They will email, if you say you have their size, they will just buy the one on auction and have you send them their size.

Answer
in the spirit of the rules, that's the correct language to put in your listing. I have used something similiar on my ME page and in previous listings, that if buyers have requests, to contact me and I'll put up a listing in my store for them.
But I agree completely that there are sellers who will take that as an off-eBay transaction rather than following through with what they SAID they'd do in the listing.
