EBay and Infopia have initiated a pilot program using Infopia's Configurator. It looks like other third party auction management companies are getting into the act.
The Configurator allows a buyer to customize and personalize their order from an eBay listing. Obviously, this tool is for the larger sellers dealing in new items. Also, Macromedia's Flash Player is required.

How the eBay Configurator Works
A buyer sees your listing on eBay. Or on your website. They like what they see, but they wish they could change some of the features, have their name printed on it, or remove one of the items from the package to save a little money.
From the convenience of your listing, the buyer can select his or her options, see in real-time the price change, customize the end product, have the customized configuration listed to your eBay store for immediate purchase.
It's that simple, and by using Infopia's Marketplace Manager you can be up and running quickly and easily.

So the big guys get to do that but I would get suspended if I let people choose between a large and an xl? Maryanne
Answer
Maryanne,
The configurator works similar to the way you select a computer to buy on Dell. The configurator auction listing contains programming which allows you to make various choices e.g. color, size, etc. When your selections are complete, a new customized auction is created and listed just for you to bid on which contains all the elements you have selected. In other words this new auction is a separate auction from the configurator auction.
I do wonder if it is allowed for anyone to create an auction on eBay and state in the auction description that the seller has the same item available in their inventory in different colors and sizes and if anyone is interested in seeing the item listed with a different color or size to please e-mail the seller.

These are fixed price, not auctions, so you can offer choices in them.
Only the auction format doesn't allow choice listings. And this would be considered a custom item, which gives more leeway. Of course you must have available every combination in the amount of items you are offering.
