question about downloading paypal history to MS Money

Question
I am trying to setup Money to download my paypal history into. I tried downloading it as a Quicken file (money can import those) but it doubles the transactions, I mean their are two of everything.
There are also the options of downloading as a tab deliminated or comman deliminated or Quickbooks, I think Money could read these also. For the Quickbooks download it is asking me for my other income account name and other expenses account name.
Has anyone successfully set this up? I don't want to have to go through and delete duplicate entries every month (trying to SAVE myself time not use up more of it!).
TIA,
Mel-

Don't have a clue but bumping.

Hey there,
Well, I am a Quicken fan personally, but I can tell you that when I downloaded my PayPal file there actually WERE two of every transaction in their download... that's how it was able to balance... like this:
I want to pay $20.00 for XYZ, and I want to use my credit card (or checking account, whatever) and so I end up with two transactions.
(1) move the money from my checking account to my PayPal account +$20.00
(2) pay the seller for XYX -$20.00
Final balance, zero.
So when you load it all in, you should end up right. At least I did, LOL! http://community.here.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif I guess what we need to know is, are there actually two of EVERY transaction? Or when you withdrew money, for example, is there only one transaction? If so, I think you should just convert it to Quicken, import it in and you'll be fine.

Dawn,
I have an old version of Quicken, Money and Quickbooks. I've always used Quickbooks for ebay but want to find something I can automatically download my bank accounts, checking plus my PayPal account to. Figured I would upgrade or buy a new version of whichever was better.
Everything imports just hunky dorey into even my old Money excep the paypal history. There is a new version of MOney for small businesses so I would probably look at buying that.
BUT there is also a new small business version of Quicken (and of course I could also get the newest version of Quickbooks). Trying to figure out which one will do what I want and was trying these older versions.
Does anyone use the newer Money for small business or the Quicken for small business? Quickbooks has much more than I use but it's from 1994 so long before downloading online.
I'd like to find one that I can download my PayPal history into with all of the information possible. Paypal DOES also have an option to download for Quickbooks, I did that and looked at it and it does have all the info I want there including address, not sure if any of the other options could be imported or not.
Can anyone tell me if the new version for small business of quicken or money will work with the paypal history?
Thanks in advance as always!

Answer
mels,
I am using the 2002 Quicken, and it works fine for PayPal downloads.
I didn't get from your posts, are the duplicate transactions the ones I was explaining? Or are there others?
Quickbooks has come a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way since 1994. You'll need their customer service to upgrade your files to a newer version, but it may well be worth it, depending on how you want to manipulate the data.

Answer
dawn,
they are duplicate entries but there are no transfers to bank account listed at all so maybe money has some how translated the second entry into a deposit also when it should have been a withdrawal?
How does quicken 2002 import the history, does it get all of the info including address or only the title, amount etc?
I think I'll probably look at the money or quicken small business versions. I wish they had free trials though, hate to buy something that won't do everything I need http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_frown.gif Quickbooks is fine as long as I want to continue to manually enter everything but I'd like to take advantage of the new online downloading capabilities http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_frown.gif
Was looking at ebay seller manager to see if it would be worth the 4.99 a month just for the sales history download but it only downloads it as a csv file, something I can get for free from paypal if I want to use a spreadsheet and go away from a program completely.
Will quicken import data from a .csv file also or only .qif files?
Thanks for your time, Dawn,

Answer
Okay, my Quicken seems to readily import .qif, but it has instructions for importing MS Money and ASCII files.
It has this in the help which seems relevant:

quote:
Why do I get duplicate transactions in the register when I import?
You may have transfers between accounts. When you import, select Special handling for transfers in the QIF Import window.
Using Special handling for transfers prevents duplicate transactions from being imported into your register. Transfer transactions are made up of two mirror transactions which appear in two different accounts. Special handling allows you to import only that side of the transfer that affects your net worth.

Re the PayPal account, it has this info for each transaction:
Seller's name (or buyer's name)
Fee if any was charged
Title of item
Amount of transaction
Date
Whether payment was sent or received
I don't get the addresses here. That is not Quicken's problem though, PayPal does not include that info in their downloads.
What is your end goal? My auction software keeps all the data from each transaction in it, I paid for it once and get updates for free. I would use it over Quicken for organizing this sort of data for tax purposes, etc. But i use Quicken for my PayPal so I can keep track of spending. What are you hoping to end up with?

Answer
enter each item manually into my MS Money Paypal accounts... but then I don't generally get 100 payments at a time so its not that big of a deal to me.

Answer
dawn,
I've been using quickbooks (though it's an old version it has(had) everything I wanted). I keep their name, addres, email address and then enter it into types of inventory (china, pottery, textiles, whatever, this info I have to manually enter no matter what). I also enter all of my checking, credit card, paypal and petty cash business payments. It has a profit and loss report which with a click I can run anytime, end of month and end of year is what I usually do.
What I'm trying to come up with is the same system except I import the data. All of that info is in my sold! program already but it doesn't export the address (and maybe nothing other than email address, title and amount, I would have to relook). The paypal quicken download only downloads the same info, the quickbooks download and the csv download download all of the data including address name, start bid, just about everything about the auction except I think category it was listed in. but I find spreadsheets very hard on the eye in terms of looking at the data.
So, I want what I have now, just not manually type the sales in, import them from sold!, paypal or ebay instead. If I switch to spreadsheet then I can just download from paypal every month and then create my own profit and loss (may have to get a better spreadsheet for reports though, not sure how detailed microsoft works can get but it can handle the csv download). But I also want a program I can download my checking, cc and paypal accounts to and would prefer that was all in one spreadsheet at least ( I think anyway) and would really prefer to use a program to download all of that into instead of a spreadsheet. For no other reason than the money, quickbooks and quicken allow you to keep these accounts balanced with your statements.
I want what I have, just want to import the data. I've already had to type all of their info into sold! to create the usps shipping/confirmation labels, I'd rather download it than retype or copy and paste. This is a fulltime business for me, I need to cut time spent everywhere I can on things that don't produce a profit.
So if a new version of money, quicken or quickbooks would allow me the same system I have now EXCEPT import my expenses and incomes, that's what I want! I downloaded the free version of money 2004 and it's no different from money 1999 which I have, doesn't even have a place for address. but maybe I should rethink whether I really need htat, I keep a paper trail of all of my sales, either the note they send with their payment or the email from paypal along with the receipt at the bottom of the usps dc which shows the date and address I mailed to.
Maybe I should be re-asking myself how much of my sales info I want in the computer program I use. Do I really even need to keep individual sales? I know some sellers here say they just enter a total for the month and don't break it down into individual sales. Maybe I should just enter a total for each category, glass, china, etc. Or use the paypal downloads that don't have the address, other than curiosity do I need that in my computer? I have a record in my sold! program.
hmmmmmmmm, I'm trying to save TIME but keep accurate sales records with all of the info that interests me.hmmmmmmmm.
Thanks again for your time! (and you too katiyana!),
