Question
I didn't want to derail Kevin's thread, so ........
Would it be possible to split the site at this point? Would people who sell bubblewrap etc still list their items in the antiques/collectibles site? Short of an expert at eBay (ha-ha-ha) vetting the items before they were listed, how could eBay possibly control, or know, what's old or considered collectible, vs a made in China yesterday knock off?
I'm not sure this idea would be doable, but at this point I wish it was.
Answer
I've really liked this idea since eBay seemed to
take a sharp right turn towards big mainstream biz. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
About the bubwrap etc - why couldn't it be included
in a "supplies" type subcat?
About the "doable" part -....ahh.....gotta go now....bye

Answer
I don't believe that it is doable, and I don't even think it is what is needed.
There is too much overlap between collector's interests and the other "divisions" of Ebay, for it to work. As an example, placing new sports items on one site and old sporting memorabilia on another site will only split the enthusiast crowd further down.
What is needed is an efficient site, with sensible category divisions, good management and less segregation to split up the market place (eg: the so called international sites, or Ebay Motors). New and old can work together in auction format. I am not so convinced that fixed price and auction can work together on one site - it tends to force the retail values lower and affect the viability of sellers who are trying to retail in what is not a retail marketplace.
Cheers, Kevin .....bed now?
Answer
The concept goes against the basic principle of eBay, which is their rather warped view of "maintaining a level playing field". The only benefit doing that would have is if eBay would accept the idea that the antiques/collectibles market needs a slightly different set of rules, a slightly different way of operating, etc. It would take a massive re-education effort in San Jose to accomplish that, and even then the hue and cry from the very people who would benefit (the antiques sellers) would likely be substantial.
Possible? Yes.
But then it would make problems for eBay's integration, for their 3rd party services integration, and for a lot more... I dunno if it would be worth it to them to do that, even if they could be persuaded that it was necessary and right to do it.
eBay Items ~~ Yahoo Items ~~ eBay Store ~~ Online Store
Answer
yes it is doable, and should be done, it would police itself, but mostly it would separate soem of it out so people could find it, ebay has gotten too slow and cumbersome to shop on, it needs focus. ...and not just in our area, in all areas...

Answer
uh...How about first defining what is an antique and what is collectible.
That may sound simple, but it can be a nightmare.
For example, is a McDonald's toy that just came out still consider a collectible even though it is still available at McDonalds?
The question regarding what is antique is far worst.
Finally, can you expect eBay to enforce this? eBay don't even close illegal auctions now on a timely basis. How can one expect them to deal with issues like what is antique and what is collectible.
Answer
not neccessarily get that particular commentary, and it doesn't matter if someone did list on a different "site", but same as now, if someone complained about let's say a liquidator's type items showing up, ask them to move or shut them down...
give the bidder an option to search just ebay classic, or search all of ebay's sites...ebayNOW/ebaythen/ebaynever/ebaywhatever...
example...when you are on ebay.CA home page, you can search choice one "in canada" or "ship to Canada"
give them the same type of options.
