Date: 08/15/03 Time: 09:11:23 AM PDT
Pictures are often one of the most important parts of a successful listing and are an integral part of the eBay marketplace. As part of our continuing efforts to improve picture hosting services for our Community, eBay is developing our own proprietary Picture Services solution and will be transitioning away from our relationship with iPIX during the fall.
The initial release of the new eBay Picture Services hosted by eBay will change the underlying technology, but should not make any major changes in the way the service works or appears to members. With a few minor exceptions, sellers listing items with eBay’s new Picture Services should still expect the same features and look-and-feel that they’ve come to expect with the iPIX-powered feature. (Please read the FAQ’s for more details.)
In seeking to provide a high quality release of the new Picture Services across a wide variety of personal computing environments, starting today we will be offering a beta test of this feature that our members can try during their normal listing process. We encourage sellers to try our beta test version and to send us your feedback on any technical issues you encounter. Your participation in this beta is greatly appreciated!
You can opt-in to the beta on the Sell Your Item form by clicking the "beta" link above the picture section on the Pictures and Details page of the Sell Your Item form. You can also opt-out of using the beta version of the Picture Services feature at any time through the same link.
eBay Picture Services is an optional photo-hosting solution, and sellers who use 3rd-party photo-hosting solutions should not be affected. For more information about the beta test, please see our Frequently Asked Questions (http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/beta-faqs.html).

Thank you in advance for your support and your participation in this beta.

Makes sense - why buy Ipix when one can develope hosting with little effort.
I just wonder why frequent sellers do not use their own hosts. It is so much better and cheaper than Ipix.

Neil, do you honestly believe eBay's OWN Picture Service will be any better? http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
I don't really care one way or the other because I've never used iPIX and would never use eBay's pic service either. I prefer not to rely on eBay owned software or related businesses.

But of course it will be thouroughly tested and debugged before releasing it. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...n_rolleyes.gif http://community.here.com/infopop/em...n_rolleyes.gif http://community.here.com/infopop/em...n_rolleyes.gif

Just a step in the direction of requiring sellers to use eBay as a pic host.
The change will be next year, I'd guess, and be under the guise of improving the eBay experience by ensuring that images are reliably hosted, yada, yada, yada.
Currently, many sellers have tons of images in their auctions, and eBay no doubt sees that as a potential source of revenue. Sellers are over a barrel-- no viable competition.
This is exactly what they've done over and over. Blackthorne, PayPal....

Same here, but without the sarcasm. http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif I could host my own images on Cox.net, but I prefer using iPix. It's easier, and I like having the pic in the title bar of my auctions. YMMV*
