Question
How do you handle combined shipping? I had an ebayer ask me about that yesterday and really the only thing I could say was that I base it on weight, no hidden fees. Then I went on to say that if the weight goes up to 3 lbs. its cheaper to send it via priority mail flat rate for $8.10. Do you think this sounds reasonable? Because I never heard back from her and she said that she was interested in 3 of my auctions...
Answer
I usually answer those questions something like:
"Sure, as long as the items are compatible, and the package doesn't get too cumbersome, we're always happy to ship stuff together to save on postage. Generally, combined shipping will never be more than actual cost, but occaisionally, if excessive packing materials are needed to safely separate items, there may be a very nominal charge for the extra supplies. Please also note that combining items may sometimes require a different shipping method than what is stated in the description. If you're unsure if the items are compatible, let us know what you have in mind and we'll be glad to let you know. Thank you for your interest in our auctions!"
However it's stated, it may be best to answer the question in a general manner (not to confuse them with weights and calculations). Let them know your happy to do it, and it'll be at actual cost (you won't gouge them). With a hint that they need to be reasonable (you won't be taken advantage of), and cover yourself if it turns out to be costly to you in materials, or something might deviate from what you state in the ad.
Sounds like you covered it fine though. It wouldn't have scared me away.
Answer
Just a reminder:
After May 14, if the combined items will need a box larger than one cubic foot (outside measurement) for a Priority pkg, they may not save any money because the price will go to the new dimensional rate...
I think my guideline will be: if it will fit in one of the USPS's priority boxes, then yes, I'll combine. If not, it's likely not to be a savings.
