Extension of Auctions - eBay listings ('auctions') have a fixed duration. eBay may on rare occasions (for example, as the result of a site outage) extend the duration of an auction. Extension of auction duration by a seller, via either manual actions or the use of automated tools, is not permitted. Extension of auctions by a seller for any reason is not only a form of fee avoidance, but also harms the finding experience for buyers.
****** which I am understanding....you cannot extend your current auctions...for example, a 3 day one, you cannot make into a 7 day one.....either manually or by using a auction tool.
Answer
I wonder exactly when that became illegal? I know of a developer who's selling an API version of an auction extender tool...and there are probably more out there just like him.
Answer
That's interesting. I thought eBay had backed off from not allowing sellers to change the ending date from say 3 to 5 to 7 days since it all fell within the 7-day fee range. Is it being enforced? I would hope they would give say 24-hours for a seller to change it in case of error at listing time.
Answer
Must have happened just recently. I was reading in one of my ebay groups this morning, and it was a new thread posted.
Makes one wonder if ebay is going to change the price to list a auction..
maybe cost more for the duration.....1 or 3 or 5 or 7 or 10 days ....each one would have a different price to list ???
Answer
Good move on eBay's part. Gotta give them credit when they do something right.

True. I never ran into one of those auctions, but if I had, as a buyer, I would have been furious.

The end could not be extended if there was already a bid. If there were no bids why would it make anyone mad?

Sniping!
Answer
I have been curious about what would happen to the snipe. Would the snipe program just reset the snipe time to correspond with the new ending, or cancel the snipe, or go ahead and put it through and then it would become a bid?

I'm guessing that would depend on the sniping program...
