Question
half of our december shipments didn't arrive on time even
though they were shipped via us mail express.
--- all made it in time for the 25th, but geeze most were guaranteed
for 2nd day delivery, and we're suppose to believe that priority only
takes 3 days?!
needless to say i was happy with the refunds, we're thinking of making
express mail our normal shipping option. (its like free shipping!)
Answer
Refunds?
Answer
If Express Mail is not attempted for delivery by the "guaranteed" time the sender is entitled to a postage refund.

When I was a window clerk our custodian's mother lived in a small town in South Carolina. For some unknown reason her address was guaranteed as overnight. Regularly the custodian mailed stuff to her by Express Mail knowing it would not get there overnight and then always got his refund. It drove our postmaster nuts but there wasn't anything he could do but complain about it.

We used to (around 1987-89) send packages via Express Mail from IL to MD and back any time of year knowing that we were likely (100%, as I recall) to get the fees refunded. It was a nice deal, really. I just assumed their "reliability rate" had gotten better by now.
We also could pick up packages at the area distribution center on Sunday mornings... if you could find someone outside the building... usually near the loading dock. I doubt that is possible anymore.

December 23rd 2PM mom decided she wanted to mail Teddy Bears to a two friends. We knew it was likely too late for Christmas and so she said well, let's take them to the USPS PO. My remark was "are you kidding? There will be an hour and a half waiting line in the PO." (We did USPS on Dec 21st and I stood waiting to mail her packages for 45 minutes.) So I convinced her to go with me to Kinko/FedEx. We walked in and there were only two people in front of us. The note on the wall said that FedEx Express Priority would get there probably Dec 29th. All other FedEx Express this and thats was listed as Dec 29th.
So I figured, what the heck, I will mail them FedEx GROUND. I figured...so they take a bit longer. Well, the guy says, "Congratulations on your good choice, sir. These will likely get there TOMORROW Dec 24th. And it was probably one dollar more than USPS. Ground is a separate company and they weren't as busy." The Teddys shipping was about $5. each.
Mom said one of the Teddys was in too small a box for FedEx. Had that been true (it wasn't), Kinkos had the boxes there for $2. Of course, she could have used a Priority Mail box for free using that method. Gotta know where the stepping stones are, or get soaked.
So we were pleased...and the Bears got there too!
