Question
I don't accept paypal.
After sending their checks/money orders/auctionpayments payments, a lot of my bidders email me, asking me to update their status to "paid" so it shows up on their "my ebay" page as paid. This is driving me crazy! I get this request, on average, once a week now.
There isn't a way to do it if the customer has paid by means OTHER THAN paypal, is there? Or is there? Ebay has made so many freaking changes that maybe there is a way and I'm totally in the dark...if there is please clue me in!
Thanks!
Also, is anyone else getting these requests, or is it just me?
Answer
How odd! I've never gotten that request, ever. Why would they care?
Sorry! Sounds irritating.

Answer
It's the dumbing down of eBay that I posted a month or so ago. With me it's the people who can't click on PayNow on their My ebay page. I don't do eBay checkout so it will not let them do it. They act like this is the only way to do PayPal. ebay has got the newbies thinking in an entirely different mindset than the seasoned pros, newbies think that the My eBay page is the eBay gospel or something.
Answer
I haven't had this happen yet but expect it to.
"Why would they care?" ... probably because they are using My Ebay to control or sytemize their payments, and if goods are showing up as "Not yet Paid", it either bothers them, or they may even think that Ebay will send them an NPB alert. A logical fix would be to allow the buyer themself to tick a box and change the status of the item as they pay by any other means (undoubtedly the system is designed to push buyers into paying by PayPal).
My recent problem, adjacent but different, indicates that almost all Australian sellers are using checkout (since I only have the problem with Australian buyers). I do not use Checkout because it does not work with my system, and since the email confirmations are from aw-confirm (or whatever), I can not "reply" to buyers, nor instantly check for whether a buyer has responded on a transaction by email. However, I now have a problem with Australian buyers not supplying addresses. If I ask for their address (even after they have paid), they will say to use the address that Ebay supplied. I Need to then explain that it is only supplied through the checkout system which I do not use, and I STILL need to prompt to get an actual shipping address. I have never had any established foreign buyer *expect* me to have their address, let alone be adamant that Ebay supplied it to me.
I have had a couple of first time newbies who assumed that Ebay would supply that information on the completion of the auction - but that is more understandable.
Annoying but I can live with it, Kevin
Answer
I think Kevin is right as to why they care. personally I keep track of what I've paid for using printouts and a highlighter, but I guess I'm low-tech.
So I guess that means there isn't a way (yet) to update? I agree that it would be nice for the buyer to be able to update it himself/herself, if it was of concern to him/her. As the seller, I don't know that I would want to update each one of my buyer's items in the system, as it would just be one more thing to take care of (with no added benefit or $ payoff). But maybe ebay could automatically have it update at the time the seller leaves feedback?

As a seller, I don't want the liablity. Why should a seller be able to change anything on the buyers "my eBay" page? If they allow a seller to change the status of items in someone elses records, who gets the blame if something isn't kosher?
Nah, they need to make this something the buyer only can do. It's their records, if it's gets screwed up, why should they be able to point fingers.

Answer
As I buyer, I do use the My eBay page a lot. I agree that eBay should allow us to select a "Paid" button so it doesn't appear as though we haven't paid (when not using PayPal), but actually have. The way I get around this is by deleting the item from my eBay tracker. I mean, if I have it and I've paid for it, why keep the page cluttered with information about it? I print out paperwork assigned with it in case something goes wrong, but this has always been a good technique for me. Maybe you can recommend that to your customers??
Answer
Perhaps ebay needs a "buying manager", similar to the "selling manager". I could see its value if a person has several purchases a week.

Answer
An easy solution would be for the seller to click on an icon on the item listing page or My Ebay's "Items I've Sold" section and have a button labeled "paid" that I can click on when they send me a payment other than PP. This effect would also indicate on the buyers side that they had paid on their "Items I've Won" account.
