PayPal refunding - how does it work?

Question
Have a buyer that paid via PayPal (obviously, from the most recent email, doesn't actually have a PP account.)
Anyways, they return an item (already had one) and I refunded immediately.
Today's email is: I,m not familiar with the a/c you mention---does it mean that the payment by my bank will be credited? I don't have a CLUE as to HOW they paid - via checking account? credit card? PayPal only states: Payment Type:
Instant
I'm assuming by their email that they paid via a checking account.
So, does my refund go into their PP account, then they have to "move it" to their checking account when it clears? Or is the refund automatically "sent" to their checking account?
Having never been on the "receiving end" of a PP refund, I really don't have a clue as to how that works.
Anyone? Please? - and thank you!

Answer
Normally, the refund shows up in their PayPal account. Since you can't "see" their account I would supply them the Customer Service Number and the transaction ID of the refund and tell them they need to contact PayPal to see how the refund will work for them, apologizing that you have no way of knowing how PayPal will handle their refund.

Answer
I've always used a credit card, and the refund amount is credited back to the card. Having never used a bank account (or even a PP balance), I REALLY don't know how PP handles that. I've emailed the CS information (number & hours) and hopefully, they (PP) will be able to better assist them.
PP's notation of "instant payment" doesn't mean anything to me.
Would that be a credit card? balance? checking account - although I THINK checking accounts take a few days to "clear" at either direction, right?

Answer
It can but we have had a deduction being made from our checking account when we were buying and when there were not enough/any funds in our Paypal account that was credited immediately to the seller, so don't know what the criteria is.

Answer
Kathleen, I will tell you my story of a refund. Let's just say that I bought something here, and got a refund, so I could combine payments. I paid with a CC, which was actually my bank debit card. PayPal sent me a message about the credit, but said it was "Pending".
Sure enough, it took about 4 days to show up in my PayPal account. You said your Buyer didn't have an account??
Anyway, I would have had to withdraw it back to my debit card (bank account) once the refund was complete. Naturally , I bought something else and used it for that, instead.
The word "instant" doesn't really mean much to me, either. I think that could be either a CC or a bank transfer. My Selling days are over for now, but I recall that part.
If PayPal treats them the same way, they might have to go in and request the money. I really just don't know.

Answer
I assume they don't have a PP account proper. With website payments, one can just use a credit card and pay. I don't believe they need to "open" a paypal account. They seem a bit confused about the whole transaction - and unfortunately, I'm not much help.
If I understand Lisa correctly, if they paid via a REAL credit card - (like I do), then the $$$ is credited right back to the card.
If they paid via a DEBIT credit card (which sucks $$$ out of their checking/savings account pronto), THEN they will/may have to "manually" move it back to their checking/savings account.
(?) Did I get that right?
(sorry if I'm coming off as being dense tonight. migraine.)

Answer
Ok, this is NOT going well.
this refund thing is getting sort of silly---What is PayPal? I have no a/c with
them. Why do I have to try to get them on the web? I paid for the merchandise
in cash, via my debit card cant you just issue me the check for rhe refund,or
do I have to continue going through this. When I bought this I gave you what you
wanted and you collected your money---no PayPal, whatever that is was
involved-------Pls stop telling me everything is clear, and then confusing with
all this PayPal stuff--------JUST SEND ME THE MONEY YOU OWE ME The money was transfered to my checking account when I shipped.
A week later, they wish to return for a refund. I receive the item, and "refund" via PayPal. We both received an email today that the funds had cleared. (I breathe a sigh of relief - then BAM!!! This email.)
HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
They need to contact PayPal by TELEPHONE with the transaction number and ask them how they get their money.

Answer
That's exactly what I told them the other day - even giving him PP's hours of operation and the telephone numbers. I guess they didn't follow through, and then when they received the "funds clear" email from PayPal a few hours ago, it threw them into this tizzy.
There isn't a DAMNED thing I can do about it.
I've already refunded the $$$$ via PayPal - as they had paid. I can't "get it back" and cut them a check or send them cash.
I'm not going to be out an ADDITIONAL $125.00!!!!

Answer
I guess you could call Paypal yourself and ask them to contact the buyer.
Maybe they have a solution. It can't be the first time this has happened...
