Can you tell what I think of YET AGAIN MORE CATAGORY CHANGES?
Answer
Maybe easier if they just tell us what is not changing http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
Answer
I think eBay should create a new top level category called "Crap". Then there could be all sorts of subcategories like:
Blue Crap
Green Crap
Orange Crap
Wooden Crap
Metal Crap
Round Crap
Triangular Crap
Hollow Crap
Solid Crap
Sharp Crap
Shiny Crap
Broken Crap
L**K More Crap
and so on . . .
It would make listing so much easier than it is now with all those pesky categories that actually, um, categorize items according to relevant characteristics. And bidders would be able to find things so much more easily. For example, a bidder looking for a basketball wouldn't have to go to the onerous trouble of browsing the Sporting Goods>Basketball>Balls category. Instead they could go to the Spherical Crap category and key in item specifics for "bumpy", "orange", "athletic" and "bouncy".

Look for changes in Photographic Images.

How amusing, I am sure that this was meant to be rolled out on April First ..... I followed the link, and won't this just titilate, (ooops I meant to use the word "confuse"), the whole effing market. Ebay is certainly on their designated target of completely stuffing any reliable aspect of this market place - any words I insert here will be banned by the censor on this board, and they are the only words that are appropriate....
So what are these changes to the Photographic Image categories in Art which have been encouraged by "eBay Community and from experts in the affected fields"?
The net result is one single category and the total reliance on item specifics to find/identify photographic images listed in the art section:
Photographic Images (9847)
====
Now if you go into the Photographic Image section in the Collectibles section you have 23 categories. The pre-1940 categories are well thought out and quite effective (and have produced very reliable results over the last few years).
Photographic Images (33172)
Antique (Pre-1940) (19888)
Ambrotypes (124)
Cabinet Photos (1521)
CDVs (937)
Daguerreotypes (253)
Magic Lantern Glass Slides (436)
Photo Albums (339)
Risque (1434)
Stereoviews (3676)
H.C. White (47)
Keystone (586)
Kilburn (162)
Underwood & Underwood (399)
Lithographs (37)
Other Stereoviews (2445)
Tintypes (523)
Viewmaster (1089)
Other Antique Images (9556)
Contemporary (1940-Now) (13284)
Celebrity (8593)
Movies (4951)
Music (985)
Sports (350)
Television (721)
Other (1586)
Nature (574)
Other Contemporary Images (4117)
==============
For the moment (ie: until the collectibles categories are removed for consistancy), the average buyer will now need to learn how to use both item specifics and the more complete category listings, and how to control the hugely messy overlap of listings, in order to see what is really being offered to them.
Other aspects that give this whole scenario a stench worse than an uncleaned cesspit on an overstocked intensive dairy farm:
* For some bizarre reason, whilst the collectibles photographic images have been split into Pre 1940 and 1940 onwards, the "Art" category has item specifics for pre 1950 and 1950 onwards......
* Ebay UK deleted 6 or 7 photographic categories from the collectibles categories about 2 months ago with a promise that they would be restored in April after they realised that they had screwed up. It appears that today Ebay UK has restored a single Photographic Images category to the collectibles section (at the time of writing it has 2 listings so it has only just been reintroduced).
* This single category on Ebay UK is category number 48, which now means that the fine 19th century/antique images which were being listed on Ebay UK will now show up on the USA site in this category:
Home > All Categories > Collectibles > Photographic Images > Contemporary (1940-Now) > Other Contemporary Images
I was buying from the Photographic Image categories on Ebay UK until they stuffed the structure of the categories. I have now given up on buying photographic images from Ebay UK - I am guessing that I am not the only person in the world to do so.....
* Ebay UK, meanwhile has "extended" the Photographic Image categoriesin the Art section, now having this category structure which does not align with the art section of the main (USA) site in any aspect:
Photographs (1664)
Contemporary (1991-Now) (13)
Modern (1940-1990) (1043)
Antique (Pre-1940) (608)
===============
This is a single brief analysis of one aspect of the current changes to Ebay's category structure and the convoluted stinking cesspit that it is becoming at the expense of a previously strong and reliable market, I am guessing that this is not the only aspect to have adverse aspects.
I am sure that there will be an effect as books lose there category structure entirely, and I will be very interested to hear whether buyers find this to be an improvement.
At the point of quitting the futility of Ebay (but probably won't yet), Kevin
