Question
you mail a package by usps, near the shipping name/address theres a note
that says:
"if the name below does not match the ___________ please return to sender"
not sure how it would be worded, but ya know if you don't recognize this name don't deliver it to this address!
seems like a good idea.

Answer
are you just thinking out loud, or is there a story behind this question?
I think it would be a good idea if it was available, with there being so many internet sales business moving through the post office, might be time for them to consider it.

Answer
Yup, just thinking out loud, giving out free ideas for usps.

not sure how it would be worded, but ya know if you don't recognize this name don't deliver it to this address! Why not use SIGNED FOR with a notation that PHOTO ID is required. I take it you are trying to prevent charge backs? If so insist on money orders or bankers checks from potential US scammers. Also make sure you ship USPS so you are cover by Mail Fraud statutes.
Hope this helps with your brainstorming!

Isn't there a service that the usps has that the item must be signed for by the addressee only? Signature required with restricted delivery or something like that? Of course, you have to buy it-they won't do it for free

I think it is registered mail you are thinking of.???

Answer
registered mail! ouch, thats expensive.
- i figured they could do some halfassed thing, like they do with delivery confirmation.

Answer
I think there is a half-something alternative to the expensive registered, depending upon package and mailing class chosen and whether insured and for how much. Registered, in USPS descriptions, sounds like USPS hand-holds the package through their own system and tracks it closely end to end.
The other option is called "USPS Restricted Delivery" and it can be used with Signature Confirmation ($1.90) or Delivery Confirmation ($0.60) or Return Receipt ($1.85). The Restricted Delivery adds $3.70 to all the other mailing cost fees.
It would appear that USPS then makes some effort to restrict to whom the package is delivered ("...may check identification..."). In legal terms "may" isn't the same as "shall" or "will". It means probably will but doesn't have to. The party obtaining the package is then supposed to to be the addressee or their authorized agent, for which they have another list of whom is "authorized."
Putting something like "Package is for Mrs. Smith, return package if Mrs. Smith isn't the party whose address this is" will probably be ignored by USPS. And if USPS did do returns like this, I'd generally expect Mrs. Smith, who is Mr. Jone's live-in girlfriend who hasn't gotten her name on his mail box to be really pissed off when her knitting widget doesn't arrive and was returned to the already-paid seller.
OTOH, if you were using FedEx Ground, the signature and proof of delivery letter would be available to you as part of the service, although to restrict delivery to only the addressee, the direct signature fee adds $2.25 and for adult direct signature adds $3.25.

Answer
If you haven't already, ...load up Shipping Assistant via USPS. It has many options with signature being one of them. The cost isn't terrible if you pass it on. http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm100/adding.htm

Answer
Yeah, I would be pizzed if someone did that to a package here. Of course I'd expect usps to ignore it. I get mail here and at our post office box addressed to all kinds of variations of cat, rescue, animal, mary ann, mary, marion, dubbs, dobbs, dobs, bob, robert, you get the idea. Our mail is seldom correctly addressed. And sometimes we even get mail addressed to our cats. Maryanne
