Question
Good afternoon
I bid on an item. It's sitting at the opening price.
At the time of bidding I also placed a max bid.
Is there a way to go back into the auction and lower or raise
my max bid?
I looked around in my ebay and didn't see it.
Thanks
Answer
I think you would have to cancel the bids you placed and then go back in and bid again with the different max.

I don't think you have to cancel it. I've had a couple of times where it shows 1 bid on one of my items. Then it shows 2 bids, but still the same person as the high bidder. So they have raised their proxy, I'm assuming. I know for sure there is a way to raise it, but I'm not sure if it would let you lower your proxy. It might, I don't know. But you can definitely put in a second bid and change it. I've never done it though. There must be somewhere on the auction page where the bid button is.

Answer
To raise your maximum bid, just bid again with the higher amount.
To lower it, you'd have to retract the bid, and then re-bid with the lower amount. I think you have to give a reason for the retraction, if I remember correctly. Or ... you could also ask the seller to cancel your bid, and you can then re-bid. If the seller does it, you won't have a retraction showing on your feedback page (no biggie unless you make a serious habit of it).
(That's assuming you're referring to a regular auction, not a dutch auction, which works a bit differently.)
Answer
What Moonrise said.
And what Jube said. You can just bid again to raise it, but it would show two bids while staying at the opening bid price.
Worst case scenario is this can be a giveaway that you had raised your proxy if someone really wants to shill.
