Last night was the sTrAnGeSt auction.......

Question
......I have ever attended in real life!
Having grown up *IN* the business, I would have thought I had already seen it all.....but after the one last night I don't know if it can be topped.
Little auction house in the country.....it was inside what must have been an old 2 stall tractor shed in its last life and sat maybe all of 15' off the county road. Good ole boy auctioneer that got so easily confused that he often forgot what he was selling if it wasn't *IN* his hand. Missed about every 4th or 5th bid too.
Then there was what had to have been the MOST varied selection of items I have ever seen. Below is pretty much a representative example of what was selling....IN THAT ORDER....during the evening:
~An old railroad latern with ruby globe
~Five Beanie babies
~set of green depression dishes
~a dozen acorn squash (bid on one...take how many you wanted)
~the BIGGEST head of cabbage I have ever seen!
~a cherry corner cupboard
~a nice old print in a very nice wood frame
~loaves of homemade bread (bid on one....take how many again)
~a Nippon vase
~a 1950s TV lamp
~a pumpkin.....a REAL pumpkin......and about a foot of vine too
~about a two dozen recent videos and DVDs
~Primative wooden Adirondack plant stands
~5 bags of potatos
~a cake
~couple of Fenton pieces
~another bag of potatos
~1950s wicker porch set
~more depression glass
~ANOTHER dozen squash
etc....yadda.....and furthermore!
It was just really strange bidding on a 50 year old cap gun and the next thing up was a dozen carrots....with the greens still attached!
Course....there were just enough GOOD buys in between the weird stuff that I will most likely be there every week now too!

Answer
did you move?

Answer
How funny! Did anyone actually bid on the produce? Did it go for more than the farmers market or super market? A cake?

Answer
OMG, I would have loved it.
Not enough to move to New York, though (I hear it gets cold up there!).

Answer
WHAT? You got an antique PA cherry cupboard for the cost of a giant head o' cabbage? uh, or the other way around?
Going prices???? Our KevinT takes keen notes and will want to know what a sack of country taters is going for these days. And don't forget the pumpkin and the squashes... :0

Answer
Nah, he didn't move exactly-he crawled through UHell
You HAVE read the "Why packrats should not move" thread, right?
Sounds like my kinda auction-the auctioneer is as confused as I am(since I've never been to one but watched alot on tv )

I LOVE IT! So did you get all your fruits and vegetables for the week while you were there? If you can get him to throw in some milk and cereal, you could be good to go!
Psssssst. Can I come to NY and go with you to that auction????

Answer
Sounds like the farmer's market wasn't making it so they threw in the produce. Also they maybe had to mix the items up just to keep the people there.

Answer
Packie,
Was this one of those "have to" auctions which slowly eliminates a family farm? The items in between may have been included hoping the neighbors would help them out with a bit of cash for useful things perhaps...trying to avoid foreclosure?
Taxes these days, crop loan payments, and things like a bad season don't do good things to our farms.

Answer
Blah, blah, blah.......Cut to the good stuff....Waddya get???
