Question
1. If sellers find value in extending auctions after they have been listed, then introduce at tiered pricing system based upon the duration of the auction. The longer the duration the greater the price.
2. Given that sellers are provided with the number of bids cancelled by bidders, provide bidders with the number of auctions cancelled by sellers. This would establish a "level" playing field.
3. Limit the number of auction durations revisions. If a seller is constantly revising auction durations, then they are not paying attention to details or might be attempting to "game the system".
4. How many auctions cancelled early by sellers might be sold "off ebay", costing the firm $$$'s?
5. If in doubt, blame stoutie.

Answer
Will ebay walk their talk of a level playing field or allow its "power sellers" to play games with their auction durations? If the latter, then the "power sellers" might be part of the force driving bidders to alternative sites. As bidders might be "watching" an item to place a last second bid. But by gaming the system the bidder is not able to place the bid as the item ending time has changed.
* The bidder may wonder -- did ebay cancel the auction?
* Or maybe - is the seller for real?
* Wonder if the seller is just out fishing for bids, or level of interest, without any intention of selling the item, (if they have it)?
* Is the seller harvesting bidder info via hidden scripts or logs files to send spam?
ebay might be wise to review some of its "metrics" to determine if power sellers have increased the sell-through rate, the average selling price or the gross merchandise sales (according to ebay) per registered user. They might not like what they find, should the perform the research.
