Westly Announces Candidacy For Governor in 2006
State controller Steve Westly has become the second Democrat to officially announce a run to become California's governor in 2006.
The former Silicon Valley executive made the announcement Saturday, launching his campaign during an online chat and conference call with supporters at 150 parties across the state. Westly, 47, told supporters he planned to try new, innovative programs to bring the state back to its previous levels of prosperity.
Westly will compete against state Tresurer Phil Angelides for the Democratic nomination. Angelides officially announced his intention to run in March. Gov. Schwarzenegger has not announced whether he plans to seek re-election.
The computer entrepreneur who help build the online auction site eBay wrote a $10 million check to his gubernatorial campaign last month. Westly said he would also be willing to contribute more of his own money to further the race if needed.
Westly was the CFO for eBay. If he wins, what will having a former officer in the Governor's mansion do for eBay?
Answer
