Either way, that list should make someone seriously contemplating launching an auction site take pause. How much money has been lost, do you think, on all of these auction ventures combined?

eBay hasn't bought any North American sites due to traffic. They have bought a few for technology. eBay Stores used to be another site. Of course, there is half.com... but those are both fixed price venues.
At one point, Yahoo was negotiating to buy eBay, and I think it came fairly close to happening, but egos got in the way, and it didn't.
My fave on that list is 321Gone because their name kinda told the story of the auction site. It was literally 321Gone. Still, it was longer-lived than Wagglepop, which was probably the shortest lived auction site of all time. Gegy never actually launched an auction site, I don't think.
And it's missing a bunch... even some major ones like the Knight-Ridder media congomerate owned Auctions.com
