Question
I think I found the reason for many new listings taking 7 hours or more to show up in search or categories yesterday. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...n_rolleyes.gif I don't know how sellers put up with these constant category changes.

What categories did you post auctions in that took 7 hours to show up in search? I listed in ANTIQUES, CAMERAS & PHOTO, COLLECTIBLES and POTTERY & GLASS and they were searchable as soon as I looked - about 30 min.
Answer
Pottery & Glass > Glass > Art Glass > North American > Other Makers
Antiques > Textiles, Linens > Tapestries

Hmmm, "Check out new breakouts" just never sounds like a positive thing....
I keep expecting:
Check out new breakouts in incompetence, apathy and an inability to actaully read your emails before we reply to them.
The higher level of Entertainment Memorabilia (making it more obvious to find) suits me.
The morons have already http://community.here.com/3/ws/emoticons/ignore.gif http://community.here.com/3/ws/emoticons/ignore.gif http://community.here.com/3/ws/emoticons/ignore.gif http://community.here.com/3/ws/emoticons/ignore.gifed the Sporting Memorabilia market entirely, so it was too much to hope that they would actually return to splitting the memorabilia by sports, Instead they have just moved it further away from "fan shop" (whatever the hell that means) which is split by sport and where about half of the sporting memorabilia was now going. The sporting memorabilia market was excellent when it was split by the actual sports but instead of return the old viability they are determined to dilute it further and further, making it harder for collectors to find the actual sports that they collect and harder for sellers to have buyers find their decent sporting memorabilia. On the plus side, they knocked about half the value off much of the sporting memorabilia when they first changed the memorabilia categories - I doubt that this wider split will actually have much affect on prices at all.
===== Just a cursory glance over the rest of it.....
Contrary to popular belief, Ebay has not forgotten it's roots. Ty Beanie Babies have had category expansions. http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
I assume that the split of China:Commemorative into Pottery & Porcelain is new. Is this a useful split? Does a Royalty collector really determine between pottery and porcelain, and will they look through 2 categories?
====
"Look for rollups within the category." This is Ebaynese for "We have ways of making you use Item Specifics"....
CD's and VHS are now single categories. Pity anyone who is selling particularly rare Genre items that would have been noticed within categories, but would not often be searched for.
=====
Investors in Ebay stocks will very much like the additional "breakouts" in decorative collectibles - they will continue to force many people to list both there and in Pottery/China to have a chance at accessing the buyers that Ebay has carefully split up for this purpose....
eg: Wedgwood and Royal Doulton each now have 3 categories in collectibles as well as the obvious Pottery/Porcelain categories.
I can't see any attrocities in the Paper and Postcards, only a few extras in postcards, such as a category for universities, and regional categories for UK.
Pinbacks now even have a Wal-Mart section. Oddly I have never seen Wal-Mart pinbacks on the Pinback buyer lists that I have watched.
Automobilia seems to just have some extra categories, nothing problematic. It does include "Antenna Toppers" - I wonder how many coat hangers will be listed there. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
Instead of a section for farm machinery manuals, they have now been put into the tractor section, under many of the brands of tractors.
Cheers, Kevin

This exactly the type of stupid BS that we don't need on eBay.
The following is a portion of an email I sent to the Collectibles Category Manager on Jan 4th 2001. This email was sent shortly after taking part in an eBay conferance call to discuss the new Decorative categories, as well as some of the other new category changes in Collectibles.
Hi Rachel,
I know that you aren't personally responsible for how the categories have evolved over the years, and I think you have a real challenge laying ahead of you.
Please, before any "new" categories are added to the never ending list, give some serious thought about deleting some of the overlapping categories. I really do feel that merging Pottery/Porcelain into one main category, with the various sub categories, would really simplify things for both collectors, and sellers.
When you get a chance, please take a look at "Carlton Ware & Carlton", Made In Japan, Wade, and some of the other companies that are found in both Porcelain, and Pottery.
I really do feel that its overkill, and only makes finding these certain items for the "browser", much more difficult than it needs to be.
Once again thanks for the opportunity to share my opinions with you.
Best regards,
Neil
We went 'round & 'round on this multi category issue & I was told that this 'issue' of multi cats for the same wares would be looked at closer & improved upon. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...n_rolleyes.gif
This conferance call involved several sellers that sold everything from nuts & bolts to antiques & collectibles, and *all* of us voiced our opinion as to why eBay was 'breaking out' these categories which was ...... to double the listing fee. Rachel & Louise both discounted our comments, and stated that the 'double category' listing fees was not the reason for splitting the cats up further. It was being done to make things easier for buyers. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...n_rolleyes.gif
The only positive thing that came out of that meeting was Louise created the Beswick category after I pointed out there were twice as many Beswick items listed on eBay, than both the Cartlon Ware and Carlton categories combined.

Which really means ..............
Meg has taken a close look at this area and figured out how to screw a bit more money out of hard working individuals who sell their items on eBay. It's actually been working so well we are planning a few hundred more breakouts in the upcoming year.
Thank you & have a nice day.
