Still, 65.9 million is not a bad customer base to draw from. Even at 5% decline annually there is a few years of viability left, provided that those visitors find the site useable, and can find the items that interest them.

Answer
What a pile of horse manure eBay uses to explain the drop.
Form the Bloomburg story:
Bloomberg News
"EBay spokesman Hani Durzy said the company focuses on measures other than traffic, such as the number of registered users and listings and the value of merchandise sold.
"The numbers that we have historically looked at to measure the business are different," Durzy said. He said users, listings and gross merchandise value have been rising."
So it's official folks, everything is fine, the ship is not taking on water, go about your selling, there is nothing to worry about here.

Of course the average ticket price has been rising since eBay has stopped caring about collectibles and moved on to the more lucrative and higher ticket items like, say, eBay Motors. They are also courting corporate sellers who deal in computers, industrial supplies and the like.
eBay discounted its base of sellers (and buyers!) a couple of years ago as visions of corporate logos danced in Meg's eyes. To her, and therefore eBay, those of us who sell lower priced items, say those under $100, well, we are just a cash cow that is being milked to death.
I expect in another few months, when the growth continues to stagnate, they will wake up and realize they are losing their core buyers. By then, the marketplace will have changed once again.
Those who hold eBay stock will realize too late that the lavishing of stock gifts to Meg and cohorts was a major mistake. And we are talking about a billion dollar giveaway here. When the going gets tough, she will get going, leaving one big mess behind. lol.
As the story mentioned, Meg is already out seeking another job. Not that she needs it, she has more than enough cash to tide her over for several lifetimes.
The person who least deserves the stock gifts is the head of technology who has made eBay a slow, bloated ship of commerce. Ask anyone here. It simply takes too long to find what you want on eBay and the situation is getting worse month by month.

But oh so true. Gross value in my categories has gone into the tank.
And as litlux said in so many words, the perception of higher gross values is based on the sheer fact many sellers are dropping lower priced items.
Very revealing!
