CNN - what a load of BS

Leslie Cohen's works start at around $500 and run to $8,500. Jeff sets his prices in the $250 to $1,250 range. And price point is a good place to start in looking at the differences of art dealing in cyberspace and at your local art gallery: Notice who's setting those prices. Yeah, whose setting those prices? Huh? Idiot.

Her prices go from $500 to $8500 and are as large as 8 feet by 6 feet.

Jeff is selling this on eBay for $1200 plus $100 shipping (or $1500 bin) and it's a "Gigantic" 27 inches by 35 inches. wtf?

You think she's just handing over her artwork to a gallery and taking what they give her? They have to base their prices on what she has to offer as a talent and what she wants to receive in compensation.

I've got an artist being displayed right now... got 1 piece of hers at $2900. She's demanding $2k for it. I can't sell it at $4k so I cut my commission and displayed her anyway. She came in upset that I marked it up so high, like I'm going to display it, market it, sell it, pay 10% to the landlord, pay 3% to the credit card companies, take time to deliver and hang it all for a $100 or $200 increase over giving her $2000. I'd lose my shirt. It's barely worth it at $2900. Who's setting that price Mr. Anderson?

What a load of crap.

"And every painting I put up," Jeff says, "I spend $20 to make it a featured listing." eBay's listing-upgrades page offers sellers featured-area listings for $19.95, saying that on average, such an expenditure may increase bids by some 65 percent. Another load of crap, but I don't have to tell this to you. However, if you list ANYTHING in art you have to buy that freakin $20 upgrade or it will never get seen, since they list all the featured before the first ending non-featured, if you're not featured you'll be lucky to make it to page 10 of the listings when you have a few hours left on the auction.

That's why I stopped listing art.

By the way less than 1/2 of his listings are featured.

Bah.

Answer
By the way, I like his art. I don't have anything againt the artists, but man that article sure rubbed me the wrong way.
