Question
When using ebay's Search Item function and then linking to the individual auctions it takes me 30 freaking seconds to BACK OUT of an auction listing to get back to the search results page.
It seems to be related to the Doubleclick sh!t (I watch the status bar (?) at the bottom) . I have those ads blocked, as well as popups. Is that the problem?
Does this happen to anyone else?
How long does it take you to back out again? (to the search results page)
Can the GO BACK time be improved?
Answer
My computer reports back, bad url.....imagine that.

I have the same problem. I, too, have doubleclick ads blocked.
Answer
The problem is twofold. First eBay has added all kinds of tracking gunk to its search pages. Any page with a URL that looks like this
http://search.ebay.com/lawn-darts_W0...QQsspagen ame
ZhQ3AhQ3AfitemQ3AUSQ3FssPageNameQ3DhQ3AhQ3AfitemQ3 A
USQQfromZR6QQnojsprZyQQpfidZ0
(breaks added by me) has their new "technology" which slows down the page display.
Second, in their never ending efforts to confound non-API third party software, they are using more and more javascript in their pages as opposed to html. I think the last count was over 30 separate javascripts required download for the typical item display page. On a 56k dialup, those downloads take forever.
You can turn off javascript in your browser, and eBay will run at least 10x faster, and with very little loss of functionality IMO.

I run ebay in my safe zone. Otherwise it is REALLY slow.
Can you tell me what exactly what settings should be disabled?
Then, I can see if it improves. Thanks.
Answer
I could be wrong, but if you turn off java, won't it make it impossible to use the listing form?
Answer
Spaz: I belive I've had that exact problem with having high security settings on ebay. Pics wouldn't come up and stuff wouldn't load.
Blanche posted the following "restricted sites" list recently.
I just entered all of them in my (restricted sites) security settings, AND LOWERED my security level to 'medium-low' and now it's MUCH faster.
Maybe it'll help you too.
I suspect I'll have to change this stuff again in the future...seems like I'm always having to tweek *something* in my internet settings for ebay.

The last time I tried using Netscape 4.7 with javascript turned off, SYI 2.0 worked fine. Admittedly I haven't tried it in a long while because I finally gave up on using NS4.7 regularly, after years and years of using it. But for basic searching and browsing it ought to work fine, or at least it did maybe a week or two ago.
Answer
snake,
how do you add it to your hosts file?
