Question
Is it possible?
I thought I read something here, but evidently I don't know enough about it to get a good search going...
I've been doing the Google adwords and got a request today to buy an item by the person 'calling in the credit card number'.
How do you deal with this when you've only taken Paypal, Yahoo!PayDirect, c2it, and bidpay to date...????

This is a pseudo merchant account, but I've had VERY good luck with them. Not as cheap as PayPal, but certainly cheaper than a merchant account:

$35 a year membership fee.
When I first started my website, I didn't take cc's directly, and it worked OK for about 4 months. Then I got an order from the US Army, and there was no way their credit card was going to work with PayPal. So I found ProPay, and have been very pleased with their service.

Yeah, ProPay is the only web based entry screen that I know of without a merchant account. Make sure you keep good records of the transactions every month. I don't know how much it is now, but they'll stick you with a $20.00 "annual report" fee if you don't keep your own records. I confirmed through some tests that all information really is on their servers, but they only let you access the last few months of records. Its a big scam no one seems to know about - but I'm just warning you for those that are using or planning to use ProPay. (I don't mind if companies make money, just don't lie about how you servers can't keep records that far back...)

How amazingly timely! I decided this week that I need to look into Propay, because I can't really justify a merchant account at this time. Melbay, could you share a little about the fees, how it works, how you get your funds (and how long it takes), and any pitfalls?
Thanks.

Does this account apply to venues other than e-bay. I am looking for a merchant account for when I do large volume antique shows, and /or fea markets. I know there are some out there, where you just use a phone, even a cell phone.. Would this account qualify for the above? Thanks for any infro...

Yes. I use it for phone orders when customers call me. They either don't want to submit CC details over the Internet (not secure they think) or they are having trouble using the shopping cart.

You can't do that with ProPay. But that would be a cool option. I'm testing out a T-Mobile SideKick and ProPay.com didn't work using their wireless Internet browser.

sure but you need to put down a deposit of 250 for every 1000 you want your account limit raised over and above the 1k/month limit. This might bother some people.
I wouldnt get rid of paypal and use this. I had a 40k month on ebay with 32 going through paypal. Paypal is nice, but this isnt a bad second option

Its called a Reserve Account. Read #3 and #4 for more details:

I think its worth if it you think you'll go over $1,000 a month and/or the $250 transaction limit. It would bother me more that I couldn't process an order because I reached my limit. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
And jools, I take back what I said earlier about phone processing. There is a very cool new add-on feature that wasn't available when I first joined. That has to be one of the coolest feature I've seen! You would look so professional if you can take credit cards at a show!
9. Do I need a computer to use ProPay?
ProPay does provide a phone-processing system (IVR) that will allow you to process credit and debit cards or transfer funds to your checking account. However, many of ProPay's other services are only available online.

Propay
At 3.5% + 35 cents per transaction, and another 35 cents to withdraw the funds, they are rather pricey. But they do offer two advantages. You can pretend to have a merchant account, since you charge the card yourself and the address verification reports if the address given you matches the cardholder. They also have two problems. One, you don't find out if the address matches until AFTER the charge goes through. If it doesn't match, you have a small window of opportunity to cancel the transaction before you are charged transaction fees. Two, I have tried to charge at least 12 cards and in every case it reported that the address didn't match. The last card I tried was my own, which I have used successfully for years. Propay reported that the zip code didn't match. I tried it twice and it's hard to misspell a zip code. So I am pretty certain that Propay's verification doesn't work. Yet their customer service wants me to believe that the same problem is the fault of 12 different banks.
You have to wait a few days for the money to be available in your Propay account. Then you have to withdraw it to your bank account and wait another few days. Propay's fees are rather high for less service than you get with Paypal and longer waits for your money. What kind of protection does a seller get? Absolutely none. Sellers are responsible for all charge backs plus charge back fees. Though some sellers have told me that they like the fact that Propay lets them pretend to have a merchant account, I feel that the fees are too high, the service too low and the potential for charge backs too high to justify using it regularly. But because there are foolish buyers out there who think that you are somehow more reputable or that they are safer if you charge their card directly, it is a good way to test if having a merchant account will help your business. If you start using it regularly, do yourself a favor and get a real merchant account.
Seller protection against fraud: moderate.
Buyer protection against fraud: high.
Seller protection against charge backs: none.
Another service you might want to look at is Payquake. This is a real merchant account but without monthly minimums. Their fees are higher (3.75% plus 50 cents and a few other charges which typically translate to 4.75% plus $1). But it is a real merchant account with no limits and if there is a charge back claim, it is between you and the customer, no middle man to confuse things. They use authorize.net, which is the most popular gateway out, with many security features including avs and cvv.
