Question
Nine out of ten buyers from my state act like they never saw the clause "Missouri residents must add sales tax" in my auctions. But their eyesight must be particularly bad because they seem to miss it in the EOA email as well.
The latest one actually sent a copy of the email where I stated I needed to collect sales tax and gave the amount, but guess what? No tax was included in the payment. I've let it slide a few times and paid it myself when the amount was small, as it usually is. No more.
I don't like paying sales tax either. But I have to collect it and pay it for the Missouri sales, or risk getting in trouble with the state tax people. Yes, most people probably think I'm just going to pocket the money, but I actually do send the state tax collector a check.
I feel like adding this to my auctions:
From Missouri? You need to pay sales tax if you win my auction. I'm not paying it for you. Don't want to pay it? That's fine, find one in Oregon, Andorra, The North Pole, I don't care, just find it elsewhere so you don't have to pay Missouri sales tax.
Answer
Just add a disclaimer and tell them please wait for them to invoice them then you can send the proper sales bill with the tax added most people see it they just dont want to pay it
Answer
Trust me, they won't wait for you to send an invoice. I've tried that.
I have to remit based on the county where the buyer lives. So I just charge the lowest rate and make up the difference.
Do you list directly on eBay or use a third-party tool? Do you accept PayPal and have a rate set in your preferences there?
Answer
YOU figure out what to do with the unnecessary "extra %".
Problem solved.
Don't you wish EVERYTHING in life were that simple!
Answer
I never have a problem bc I put it in the listing so when they go through checkout its automatically added
Answer
Ditto. Once I started using Checkout, my number of sales tax no-pays went way down.
Answer
Odd. I actually have relatively few nonpayers on state tax.
Well, except for one lady who was winning auctions right and left and told me she was here in the Golden State visiting her daughter.
That was 18 months ago. She's still here. (Poor daughter! 18 minutes of my mother makes me crazy!) She's started paying sales tax now.
But yes, that would truly be frustrating. This line is in my TOS:
"California bidders must include CA sales tax in their payment or it will be returned to them." Maybe that's doing it?
Anyway, I sympathize...

Answer
Well, the person paid. Sent an additional money order for the amount of the tax. I expected a nasty note, but didn't get one, just the money. Cool. I don't face this problem all the time. I only get the occasional winner from my state. But it is frustrating.
Answer
In our EOA notice we state we can't ship unless all taxes are paid. I don't think it's always successfull but, worth a try.
