Tried to Register and Failed - User ID Issue

Question
You will be happy to know that because of all your encouragement and harassment (as is the case with gabs-a-lot) I decided to register on eBay last night.
My attempt failed ...
As you may know, I’m given careful consideration my name. To check on possible User ID’s, I’ve been doing an advanced search and clicking on find a member. Most are either taken or show as unregistered users (which you can’t use). The very odd one does come up with “User ID Invalid”. I just assumed that these names could be used. Sound reasonable? BTW, I'm not using any symbols.
Yesterday, I was excited to find a decent name that said “User ID Invalid”! I also checked this name with my IP provider and was able to obtain a matching e-mail address. You have to provide your e-mail on the registration form and I wanted to get this arranged ahead of time.
I went through the entire process, was on the last page, typed in my glorious new name and a message popped up saying THE USER ID WAS NOT AVAILABLE!!!!!!!
What gives? Does this mean that I can’t search for a name ahead of time? Do I have to try them one by one on that page? That makes finding a matching e-mail addy less likely.
I’ll wait patiently for any words of wisdom.
P.S. I'm going to take Ms. Chocolates advice and just register any old name to get access to the site and forums but that doesn't help me with the above.

Hey Canuck:
Wy do you think you have to have a matching email address. Mine doesn't match my username. It used to a long time ago, but I was getting so much spam on it, I changed it.
Just get yourself registered. Yeah, it is tougher and tougher to come up with an ID that you want since ebay has millions of users, but it isn't really that important, as long as its simple.
So don't try to match your ID and email address, as it doesn't matter if they do.

Answer
Sometimes certain words will trigger a "not valid id"-I know you probably don't want to publish what it was, but try something similar to register with.
And your email does not have to match anything about your id-know it sounds cool to have it match, but you can change both at a later date to get them to match down the road if you want to.

Answer
yesterday was nickle day
the site might have been glitching, I seen screens from every country, I swear.
try again this afternoon with the alias you want first.

Answer
I thought it would be better to have a relationship between the two so that when I send someone an e-mail ... it will remind them who I am on eBay. But it doesn’t matter huh? Isn't it like not having your purse and shoes match?
Oh and gabs, you are probably right ... it was all you nickle people causing the problems! Good point though, I will try again. So how many did you manage to get up yesterday?

Answer
a crapload
just over 2300
over twice as many as we uually do
Make your alias then make the emial address to match it and change the email on ebay
