Canada Post rules for U.S.A. Letter Post

Question
Does anyone know if you can send merchandise/goods by U.S.A. letter-post from Canada (which is airmail and includes insurance). The Canada Post website states what CAN be included (letters, cards, postcards, etc.) but doesn't specify what CAN'T. Specifically, “other letter-post” simply says “items that are non-standards and/or oversize”.
I phoned Canada Post and the person I spoke with wouldn’t give me a straight answer ... she kept saying that letter-post is intended for letters, paper documents, etc., however she didn’t say that merchandise it it not allowed.
Does anyone happen to know? Has anyone in the States received merchandise sent this way? My items will be within the size and weight restriction for this service.
Thanks a bunch for being patient with a newbie.

Answer
The maximum allowable thickness of Other Letter Post is 2 cm. If your package isn't thicker than that, and meets the length and width dimensions, I don't see why you couldn't send merchandise that way.
Edited to add:
I have the latest postal prices pamphlet from Canada Post. At the very bottom of the page which deals with postage costs to the U.S. is this statement:
Letter-post items containing anything other than documents must be accompanied by a Customs label 43-074-076 (CN22) I checked. That's the small green customs label - not the larger white label that it now required for small packets.

Answer
Thanks Irene ...
That is great news. I wonder why the Canada Post person didn’t tell me that or why this is not indicated on their website (that I could see)? It makes sense that you would still have to fill out a customs label.
I am so excited!

Answer
You are correct Irene,
I thought I read in the “features & options” link for U.S.A. letter-post that $100 insurance was included but after taking a closer look I realize that this is an “option” if you send it REGISTERED MAIL which is much more expensive.
Thanks for the clarification. At least I have the option to send my items small packet with the insurance.
I’ll have to look at the pro’s and con’s between the two.
