Question
I just registered 3 domain names yesterday and was asked 2 times if I really wanted them to be public. And I said yes because all my information would be listed right on the front page of my store.
Then today I actually get a call from Godaddy asking the same question again. And this time I told him I'd check into it before making a decision. He's talking about phishers and scamers and spammers and all, and I have no idea if it's necessary or not. Tomorrow morning is the deadline for my decision.
And it wouldn't be just for the name I'm actually going to use, but all 3, even though 2 will probably just be sitting for quite a while.
This privacy product would add another $23.85 to what I've already paid, and times are tight for me right now. I don't really want to do it unless it's absolutely needed.
Does anyone have any opinions on this?
Thanks much for your help.

Answer
I have 6 domains and they are all public. I have nothing to hide. Your info will be available on Whois for all to see, this includes your phone number. Most email spammers "scrape" your webpages for email addresses. I just put all my email through Mailwasher and get rid of the spam. All that being said I don't really think it's that big of a deal.
Answer
I think it depends on what info you have on your registration. I use a PO box for all my internet dealings, but my brother uses his street address. I think he's nuts, but he doesn't see any danger in it.
Maybe I just have a paranoid personality, but I don't like the idea at all of having the location of my home available to any and all. I have my phone number on there, but it's unlisted and doesn't come up on any of the searches I've done.

Thanks you two. At first I thought it was unnecessary, too. My name, address and phone number are all on the front page of my soon to be store, so getting my information would be easy for them.
I think I'll probably not go with the privacy feature. Live dangerously.

I only do public domains too, it just is for the whois and that info can be found out anyway! I don't use a home address or telephone number though, all that info IS private and can't be located with the phone company, google, etc.
Answer
i have mine public, so that a prospective buyer of my domain name can contact me easily so we can discuss the sale price.
