Answer
When I first saw this I shook my head and thought "What's next? Will I start getting emails offering me used widgets and asking for a quote if applied towards something I'm offering."
Then I read where it would be optional and comments from a seller of golf equipment where he had tested the option and it had provided a worthwhile source of ongoing inventory and sales.
I guess there might be a very narrow selection of items where customers want to upgrade and the accepting of trade-ins will be worth the effort and problems but it's nothing I find of any interest.

Lemme 'splain it to ya Blanche:
The seller offers a pair of "dirty" panties and gets a clean pair in return – which can then be used again –
Sort of like a perpetual motion marketing machine.
Someone could start an entire business with a 3-pack from Wal*Mart.

Answer
Used CD stores will let you trade in your old CDs for store credit. This is always higher than the cash you get in return. So, trade-in sounds better to some people.
As the buyer, you see them sorting through your CDs and only buy the titles they think they can sell at a profit.

Answer
OK, the used CD reference makes some sense to me. I couldn't understand the concept originally because I sell and buy antiques and I can't imagine how one would trade them in for something else. Much too cumbersome.

Answer
In traditional marketplaces you see trade-ins with CDs (as noted above), used book stores will give you store credit for your books...but the example most of us are familiar with is cars. How many of us have "traded in" a used car when we bought a new one?
It is an idea that could work for certain types of merchandise, especially on ebay where the selling of used merchandise is so accepted
