Question
Letter from ruby lane I got today said that they are leaving the counter business. ))sad face((. I will miss them.
here is a copy of letter:
Since 1999, Ruby Lane has been supplying counters to the auction
community. Ruby Lane's primary web business is our Antique,
Collectible, Fine Art, and Artisan web site of over 1400 shops at
http://www.rubylane.com, and counters were initially developed as a
way to promote our primary web site. In return for this advertising
benefit, we provided free counters to the auction community.
In 2001, new rules about advertising and linking to 3rd-party services
caused us to lose most of the advertising benefit of our free
counters, because we could no longer promote our primary site.
Looking for options to keep the counter service available for those
who depended on it, we decided to try a subscription based service,
and added many enhancements to the counter service for subscribers.
This new service was launched in July of 2001.
Over the last two years, it has become clear to us that there is low
demand for a paid subscription service for auction counters, one of
the reasons being that there are still many free counter services
available, and the auction sites have also made it very easy to add
free counters from their listing pages. Since many of the companies
with free counter services are primarily in the business of providing
services to auction users, they do enjoy the benefit of advertising
their primary business on auction sites, so providing free counters
makes sense for their business.
Ruby Lane's primary and growing business is with our main web site of
Antique, Collectible, Fine Art, and Artisan shops. We are one of the
largest Internet sites in our niche market, and we have to focus our
efforts on the aspects of our business that are growing. To that end,
we have decided that we will not be renewing any counter subscriptions
after October 1st, 2003, and will also not be accepting new
subscriptions. For the next 12 months, we will continue to provide
counter services to subscribers according to our subscriber agreement.
It has been our pleasure to provide the auction community with
counter services over the years. Thanks for letting us serve
you!
Ruby Lane

Answer
I will miss the convenience of their counter page to check my auctions.
But to be honest, I have not found a lot of utility in the counters.... Has not helped me improve sales, so I doubt I will be using any anymore.
Answer
I just started using Spare DOllar and they have a counter page, so I was going to give up Ruby Lane anyway. Oh well.....

Yep, I agree. I quit adding them about 3 months ago again. I have had items sell with one page view, and items not sell with hundreds. The only thing it sometimes shows is POTENTIAL interest.
