Question
several times today when I did a search the results came back with very few items. I noticed that at the top of the results was a box that was checked the said "show results for items within 200 miles" WTF!!
After unchecking the box, I got many more results. What upsets me is that no way did I check that box to start with. Thanks ebay for confusing anyone that lives more than 200 miles from me.
Answer
Sandy...you must have had the box checked...here is the little experiment I did...
Went to top of a page and clicked on advanced search, when the search page came up I entered "twin bed" in the search box and got over 1500 results...there was no box at the top of the search about within 200 miles of me.
Then I went back to the search page and clicked on advanced search in the search area and igot a different page that had many more search options, including one for items within a certain distance from whatever zip code I entered, when I entered my zip code and 200 miles and did my twin bed search I got 50 items, and the checked box about 200 miles. The milage box was unchecked when I got to this page and I had to check it off
I then went to the top of another page and entered single bed in the search box above the words advanced search I got a lot of results but no mileage box
What I did notice was that the box stayed checked unless I turned it off, so if I used the enlarged advanced search page later and hadn't unchecked the box I would get the limited results. But, even if I left the box checked, if I went back to the basic page I would not get the mileage limiting result...nor would I get it if I used the search box at the top of the pages.
Answer
ummm, not necessarily did she have to have it checked. I've not checked that box-heck, have never even seen it and it was checked for me, too when I did a search earlier
Must be some kind of glitch that is going around.
Answer
I've never checked that box - or even seen it - yet my searches were defaulting to that option starting today.
It must be yet another eBay "enhancement".
I see nothing about it on the eBay SEARCH discussion board though...
Answer
I did a search and it came up with NOTHING! Strange, usually a few items in that search. In looking further, I noticed I had "selected" only items within 200 miles. Well, I sure never did, and unchecked it. Had one heck of a time getting rid of int a and when I did, it was back again at 200 miles. eBay much have been "fixing" things again. Seems ok now, no more 200 mile limit showing I never did select.
I also noticed my sold item page has changed and I am still trying to figure out where everything went to!
Long burning question....
At eBay live, I cant imagine ANY happy sellers, but its seems like rah rah "good going Meg" from what I have heard. I would have expected lots of burning torches, and at least a few lynch mobs.
I'd expect a lot of...
"Look, he is with eBay's IT staff! Get the bas*ta$d!"
Answer
how odd...I had no glitch when I searched

Here is the original announcement on this feature:
***Coming Soon: Distances Sort and Filter Enhancements***
Date: 12/09/04 Time: 01:30:36 PM PST
In June we introduced Distances Sorts and Filters, a new method for buyers to search for items within a certain distance from their location. In the next few days, we will be introducing several enhancements based on Community input since the original release. These changes will give buyers even more flexibility in the way they search for items, and will make it easier for sellers to have their items included when buyers use Distances Sorts and Filters.
For Buyers
Currently, buyers can use Advanced Search to look for items within a certain distance from their ZIP Code. Once these changes have been introduced, buyers will also be able to search for items within a specified distance from a particular city. A list of popular cities will be available in a drop-down menu. For example, a buyer will be able to choose to search for items within 75 miles of ZIP code 95125, or within 75 miles of Los Angeles.
We will also be a adding a new filter that allows buyers to search by ZIP only in the Search Options section in the left-hand navigation bar of search and listings pages.
For Sellers
Currently, when sellers list their items, they must use a checkbox to indicate that they want their items included in distance searches. After this change, any item listed with a valid ZIP code will be automatically included. If you do not want your item to be included in distance searches, you can remove your ZIP code from the “Item Location” section on the Pictures and Details page of the Sell Your Item form.
In addition, a standard item location based on your ZIP code will be shown on the item page. This will appear in “City, State” format (for example: San Jose, CA). If you would like to specify a different location, you can enter custom location text by choosing the “Custom Location” option during the Sell Your Item process.
***Coming Soon: Distances Sort and Filter Enhancements***
I'm not getting the same "error" today - I believe that this was probably a glitch associated with the rollout of all these new search features. This is a selectable option in Advanced Search, based on the ZIP code entered and selectable from a drop-down menu that specifies from 10 to 2000 miles. I'll bet that it somehow defaulted to "200 miles" on the rollout and they have now corrected it.
