Remember That $250.000 sale on ebay?

Question
Questions loom in the darkness of this story. Where did a 21 year old amass that collection? Can't seem legal to me...
Ain't no way folks...There's more to that story...it's just not in the news..Yet!

Answer
Something is not right with this story. In the article, he claims that he sold the collection for $250,000 but if he did, then he didn't sell it on Ebay. He must have sold it to the dealer in an off Ebay transaction.
The first time he sold the collection at $250,000 on a buy it now - the deal didn't go through. That buyer left feedback for the seller that said - "my son clicked on buy it now by mistake, transaction didnt go through. sorry"
Then, he put the collection up again - 2255305647 - and it ended right under $200,000 without meeting the reserve. And he hasn't relisted again.
And I have to agree with you there, where would you get the money to accumulate such a high priced collection? Those are some pricey comic books he had & you can't tell me that "friendships with “some serious dealers” let him snag rare and valuable issues at good prices" meant that they sold him $1000s of dollars of comic books for pennies on the dollar.
Sounds fishy.

Answer
probably fencing them for a friend
how can one check ownership on this sort of thing, what if he was an affiliate seller and it was consigned to him, how would he know it wasn't stolen?

Answer
Inheritance?

Answer
Filter81 belongs to a Collector Society Board and he hangs out in the Comics forum. His posts about the auction can be seen in the link below. The page shows the most recent posts by Filter81 so if you click on the NEXT tab you will see earlier ones:

This was his first listing for the comic collection: http://www.blogsnow.com/cache/ebay/2.../ws/cache.html
He also had a very rare Superman #1 from 1939 comic for sale on eBay with a $30,099.99 reserve which wasn't met. I read a post he made on one of the boards stating that he closed the auction early because someone was interfering with and harassing his bidders. He said it was sold privately.

Answer
I'll bow to the pressure
The Superman #1 was a restored book, 7.0 bringing it down to a 3 out of the plastic encasing...no big deal once restored. Really..
It was an inheritance supposedly.
Purchsed lot by Mile High Comics likely.
Amassed collection by himself? Unlikely.
Uh uh...

when i was a kid (like 15,16ish) a friend of mine in his early 20s had his own sports card store
we lived in a little town in eastern canada so kind of in the middle of nowhere really
my buddy's contents were worth just under 200,000 when the bottom dropped out of the market and if any of us had access to ebay at the moment we probably could have gotten close to half a mil for his stock at that time on ebay
collections like that are not hard to amass if you know your subject and pay a bit of attention
see the thing is the auction dropped out of the market for our little area but book value for the cards were going up
others were still buying and selling but not where we lived
if we could have had access to a greater market while still grabbing up local cards that had no more demand on the local market we would have been set
simply thing he really could have amassed that collection himself if he lived in the right market at the right time

Answer
not everyone had money handed to them as a teen, speaking from experience, i started my mail order company in high school, bought a house, fast cars etc, all before i was 21.
ya never know.

Answer
all interesting possibilities, and all totally possible.
I am glad he moved it along, collections should be where they are appreciated, once we grow bored with them, move them along and start on something else.
