Question
We are off tomorrow on a buying trip
this time of year we leave the night before and stay in a motel <with a pool of course> so we will be rested to sort when we get there, in this heat it is just too much to drive straight through.
we drive about 3 1/2-4hours and spend about 3to 6 hours sorting and loading the truck......we really need a trailor too....but so far we have made a full size van work. We do this once a month for this place.
in the cooler weather we just get up really early and drive straight though to be there for 8:00 am.
two people, all day, others are one person one day pickups. We are 2 1/2 hours from anywhere.
What degree do you go to to acquire your inventory?

Answer
Gabs,
We find our inventory all over also. Sometimes fairly local, which I classify as 4 hours one way, and sometimes not so local.
Generally our purchases are pretty much bare bones mad dash's over the weekend as I need to be back to work on Monday morning. Sometimes that is not possible, and I use vacation from the real job.
I have a trip organized, which will have loading, and driving 900 miles round trip in one day, with two people.
We have a one ton pickup, with topper, and a 22 foot enclosed trailer, or a 18 foot flat bed trailer. I really like the trailer set up, as the inventory can stay in there as we are inventorying it. But we are fortunate to have space to store them also.
Our farthest trips have been to southern OK, and Little Rock Arkansas. We are a stones throw from Canada.
We also have a fair amount of stuff shipped in. UPS is our buddy! We have had stuff come in truck freight also. This can actually save money in some circumstances.

yep the snow melted, now it is too dry...and hot, I think I want the snow back.
We ar elooking for a trailor, but of course, when I want one, there is not any to be had.
We get new storage space this Friday, whooo-hooo. room, I can move again, for about a week. http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif

Used trailers are not easy to come by, as no one sells them. We sold our old trailer on ebay, a 16 foot wells cargo, had over 3000 hits, 32 bids, and sold for over 1,000 dollars what I was willing to sell it locally for. We used that trailer for 10 years, kept the equalizer hitch, and made 1,500 dollars on it http://community.here.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif
But I just keep my ear to the ground, and do come up with them occassionally. You just can't be in a hurry. Get a quality trailer, you spend more now, but less later.
Answer
On the average, once every 3 months or so I do a 1600 mile round trip 3 day 2 night trip.
Once it was so congested on I-95 that for the last 500 miles of the trip one way I never got above 40MPH.
That SUCKED. The worst drive I ever took.
Oh, the auction has an average of 1500 lots and is OVER in 4 hours or so. If you can hang at this one you can handle ANY auction! http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
The fastest long road trip was overnight from Cheyenne WY to Oklahoma. Arrived at 4am, attended auction from 10am to about 6pm, then drove home. It was worth it!
In the quest for paper....
No drive too far..... No auction too fast....Rain or shine or sleet or snow, to the auctions I will go....No attic too spidery...no basement too boogieman infested... Well, maybe I'd skip the boogiemans...
Saw a mummy sit up in a basement once. I ran!
Three seconds later, sitting the the safety of my living room about 1/4 mile away, I decided that perhaps it was a homeless person. Maybe. Maybe not.....
Answer
wow, I have never driven that far..... I would love to but not sure I could get the hubby to do it.http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
I mostly attend local auctions and then I have a couple of sources who send me boxes of old paper that they don't want to dig thru that they pick up along the way. I love to dig thru it and throw half of it away but always always always make $100's of dollars on there left overs! http://community.here.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif
Sounds like fun, hope you make a great "haul" http://community.here.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif

I wanna go to that auction, I bet I could keep up with that auctioneer...WOW...what a rush that would be. Where is that? http://community.here.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif
last weekend we went to an auction with NO hydro, of course no one else showed up because they figured it would be cancelled<big grin>
three dealers, 400 lots in 2 1/2hours, I picked up a load of furniture I didn't even want, but it was my turn to open the bidding http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
made a small fortune at a yard sale last weekend, one we weren't planning on having of course.
I love auctions.

totally dumb question - but where do you find out about the auctions? Are there trade papers or specific sites you visit?
Answer
Antique ally,
Not a dumb question. I live in a small town but we have an auctioneer service here so he always has flyers up at the bank.
You can find them in the newspapers all the time, just look in the want ad section. Also google search with the closest town for auctions and you will be amazed what pops up.
Lots of auctioneers have websites now so you can peek at what is coming up and then get on their mailing list if you tend to like them.
I tend to be picky about what auctioneers I go to. If you get to be a regular you get "special treatment" http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
