does anyone have an idea why my eBay titles have "question marks" instead of "dots" in them?

Question
I have not changed anything (I don't think)... I use AuctionTamer to post our auctions. Note how my titles used to have "dots" (I don't know the name for it, it is the vertical slash) in the title to make the titles easier to read, but suddenly the "dots" changed to "question marks", which looks so silly and unprofessional! http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
Here is what they used to be: last week's auction (see title)
Here is what they are this morning: this morning's posted auction (see title)
Can anyone help me figure out what is causing this?
Thanks kindly, have a GREAT weekend!

Answer
those are "bullets" - on my computers, you get them by typing ALT+149 , or maybe it's ALT+148... i fergit
the vertical mark - are you referring to the forward slash?
if you push the shift key, it turns the forward slash to question marks...
could that be it?

Answer
Low-tide, thank you, I will try your ALT-14? combinations.
One quick note: I am not referring to any forward or backward slashes, but rather the completely vertical one! On my keyboard it is found by hitting "shift" and then the backslash key (just above the main "enter" key). It is this vertical slash (for lack of the formal word) that produces the pretty "dots" on eBay titles (in the past, LOL).

Answer
G'day Barbie,
It sounds like a change in the HTML format or something, and may just be temporary. If you look at last week's auction - when you pull it up (well for me anyway) the blue band across the top of the page that says Ebay Item and then the title, has lines instead of dots. There have been times that I have seen apostrophe's convert into question marks as well. I can only assume it is something to do with the HTML of pages.
Not helpful at all, Kevin http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif

Answer
No, no, *very* helpful! Thank you both, I'll keep trying to figure it out...

Answer
The symbol could be different with each font. If eBay changed the font they use for the header this could change the symbol displayed. Some fonts do not have all of the symbols and display some other default symbol.

In all my auctions last week the ¢ (alt 155) symbol was replaced with the letter A with a carat on top. I'd like to figure out how to get the cent symbol back in!

Apparently the problem with the special characters is due to the format of the new SYI page and it's NOT going to go away. EBay support says you can't use Word or Front Page - they tell you to use notepad or another HTML editor. However, they are WRONG because you will still have the special character problem if you use notepad or if you even type directly into the SYI form.
Here is the chat from Live Help someone posted on the Listing Board and eBay's answer to the problem ( the WRONG answer ) Bolding is mine:

I was so tired of all the problems with the quotes and dashes, and apostrophes. Everyone on the board has a different answer and none of them seem to work. So I went to the Live Help. The bottom line? TOUGH! Although "Zach" was very nice and I did not have to wait at all for an answer from him, I'm not satisfied with the answer. I honestly feel that something can be done about this problem. Here is a copy of our actual transcript:
info: Thank you! Your request has been sent. All requests are handled in the order received. Your wait time will be approximately 0 minute(s) and 31 seconds. Thank you for waiting.
info: You are now chatting with 'Zach H.'
Zach H.: Hello and welcome to eBay Live Help!
Zach H.: My name is Zach...how may I help you?
Sweetkatie: Hi Zach. Give me a minute to type this out, OK?
Zach H.: sure! take your time.
Sweetkatie: Ever since I have had TL (since it was first released) I have always typed my descriptions in MS Word and copied/paste to TL. Never been a problem. Now all of a sudden anytime I use an apostrophe, a dash, a quote and other symbols it comes up in the auction as question marks and other strange symbols. What the heck is going on?
Sweetkatie: On the discussion boards they suggest typing my descriptions in notepad. But I don't like using notepad, and it's never been a problem with MS Word in the past, so why now?
Zach H.: with the new sell your item format...you cant use MS word to copy and past the HTML into your auction listing.
Sweetkatie: But Zach, I've been using it for a long time with no problems. This problem just started a few weeks ago.
Zach H.: copy your HTML from MS word then paste it into notepad..then copy it from notepad.
Zach H.: Yes..I am aware of this.
Sweetkatie: So if I type my description in MS Word then cut and paste it to Notepad, I can then copy it from Notepad into TL and I won't get that problem?
Zach H.: correct..that would work.
Sweetkatie: OK Zach, thanks for your help. Sweetkatie http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
Zach H.: You're Welcome
Zach H.: anytime! : ) <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
