UPS price increase.

Here is a copy of an email which I received from UPS anouncing their annual price increase. About what I expected.

To help you plan for the coming year, we would like you to be aware of new UPS® rates that will take effect January 3, 2005. In addition, you can click here to request a printed UPS Rate and Service Guide by mail, or sign up for a one-time reminder e-mail — both delivered during the first week of January.
Below is a summary of upcoming increases in our list rates*:

Beginning January 3, 2005, UPS will reduce the fuel surcharge on UPS Air Services, UPS 3 Day SelectSM and International services, capping it at a maximum of 9.5 percent. A Ground Fuel Surcharge for UPS Ground, UPS Ground Hundredweight Service and UPS Standard To Canada will be applied on January 3, 2005 at 2 percent. In the following months, the Ground Fuel Surcharge will be based on the On-Highway Diesel price and may fluctuate. The current fuel surcharge is described at UPS.com®, and details regarding the Ground Fuel Surcharge will be available at UPS.com on December 1, 2004.
Delivery Area Surcharge will increase by $0.25. The residential surcharge for UPS Air Services and UPS 3 Day Select will increase by $0.35, and the UPS Ground residential surcharge will also increase by $0.10. Declared Value, protection against loss or damage of a package, is automatically provided up to $100. Additional protection is available for $0.40 per $100 of value up to $50,000 per package, with a minimum charge of $1.20 for packages valued between $100.01 and $300.
On December 1, 2004, you will be able to view the 2005 rates at dailyrates.ups.com. At the end of December, you will receive new rates in an electronic update to your UPS WorldShip® software. Also, until you perform the UPS WorldShip 7.0 software upgrade, the correct billable pricing may not be reflected. On January 3, you'll be able to download the 2005 UPS Rate and Service Guide, or order it via the Order Supplies application at UPS.com.

dhl will end up being 2.9% busier.

The problem with DHL is that they will not deliver to all areas. Where we live, they refuse to deliver and so we must insist on folks shipping another way. UPS does come out and with no fuss nor bother. I hate that the rates are increasing, but so is everything else...

there was a post on the auctionbytes book board that usps is also wanting to raise rates. they'd like to apply for rate hikes that would be phased in in several increments over the next 2 years.
