Question
Since ebay has killed off their 'go local' feature of being able to browse all catagories for items being sold near me I am looking for another venue that has some stock and a feature that will allow me to easily locate any items near me.
Does anyone know of a site that has such a feature?
Thanks.
Mike.
Answer
I've done a lot of trading on Craigslist. http://www.craigslist.org/
Craigslist got its start in the San Francisco area and now has regional sites in about 20 areas. At least in the San Francisco area, the people that I've met to transact with have been very kind , and not flakey like some of the people I have tried to sell to on eBay
Another venue is LiveDeal. http://www.livedeal.com/
I think they have lots of venture capital behind them, because they have been advertising heavily through MyPoints. I posted a request for an item (pre-Windows 95, Windows software disks) and received 3 responses from people who were willing to sell.
I posted a few unsellable books onto LiveDeal and unsurprisingly, I got no responses

Powerhouse, give this site a try.... Wildgopher.com They have a large section of regional links near the bottom of the home page and Jacksonville is one of them. The best thing about Wildgopher is that the management uploads the listings to Froogle several times a week. It's amazing how quickly my listings make it into Froogle with the correct selling price and photo attached! They also give you a nice storefront similar to eBay's with no charge for simple listings. I've sold several books there because of Froogle. This is a link to my Wildgopher store if you'd like to check out how you can customize things.

Don't know if this will help or not but you can find things by distance (I think).
I entered www.ebay.com. Then on that page right under the search bar is a link titled "Smart Search". On that page you click on the pull down "Sort By". The bottom option is to sort by "Distance - Nearest First." Maybe that will help.
Good Luck.

Did you see the announcement that GreedBay just purchsed 25% of craigslist?
***eBay Acquires Minority Interest in craigslist***
Date: 08/13/04 Time: 05:00:02 AM PDT
We are pleased to announce that today we have acquired an approximately 25% minority ownership interest in craigslist (www.craigslist.org), an online community with classifieds and forums. The relationship will allow us and craigslist to share resources and creativity on behalf of online communities everywhere.
Operating since 1995 and with dedicated sites in 45 cities around the world today, craigslist is an online meeting place for millions of people looking to share ideas, meet a friend, find a job, or locate an apartment. The site is a magnet for people who want to trade in such goods as tickets, furniture, cars, and sporting goods.
We believe craigslist and eBay have complementary business models, and we expect to learn a great deal from each other. We will continue to keep you up-to-date on any news related to craigslist.

craigslist has a very different culture from eBay.
eBay talks about community but has many sanctions it seems eager to impose on its customers. craigslist IS a community, with few restrictions.
eBay can be overwhelming for the first-time user. craigslist is low-tech and easily accessible to all.
I too am dismayed that eBay continues to eliminate the competition by buying it, but craigslist is in fact such a simple and non-proprietary format that it could easily be revived under a new name.

ebay will have to do some trimming before that thing takes off. It's a glorified newsgroup posting...

You will also note, however, that the eBay search bar (smart search) takes one to the eBay stores ONLY - it is subtle but real. To get to other auctions - noncommercial - one must use the "SEARCH" .....in the horizontal list including my eBay, community , etc. above the search with the blank area to insert the item for which you are searching.
