PayPal has been down all day. It started last night with thier schedule update. It appears the "push" updated would not complete and they did not want to kill it. At least that is what I was told. As a result, network resources were so low (server levels so high) that I found about 1 out of 20 attempts would go through, but then after you hit the next page, you had to refresh another 2o times.
I just found this forum, so at least something good has happened today. I just had an article writting about my business and yesterday was a record sales day. Now PayPal is down and I have zero sales for the day.
It is hard to believe they do not have a backup plan and that their system is not segragated into seperate opearting areas so that if one goes down the entire system does not fail.
Around 14:00 EDT they had the site down with a notice that it would be back up in around 14:30 PDT. However at 15:30 the warning was gone and back to the same problem.
I am now about to get in about once ever 5 refreshes, so I guess things are improving.
Nothing less then a public hanging at PayPal will restore my faith in them.

I flew to Michigan from Orlando, tried to use my paypal debit card to rent the car at 10:30 pm and came back declined. Same thing at the hotel. Later on this morning tried to use it at an atm, it says Bank not reachable. Does anyone know what is happening here?

Call PayPal. There are reports that while the transactions are being denied to the merchants, the money is being removed from your account anyway.
PayPal is putting the usual eBay spin: SOME members are having intermittent trouble reaching the site SOME of the time. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

All of my customers have been effected yet PayPal has the nerve to say it is only effecting some people. No question about it, I am loosing money, my customers are loosing money and PayPal is loosing money over this debackel. What really peves me is that PP is acting as if this is the way it works, things go down once in a while. I can't remember the last time the visa autharaztion world wide network went down.
Does anyone have a back up when PayPal goes down?

It is hard to believe they do not have a backup plan and that their system is not segragated into seperate opearting areas so that if one goes down the entire system does not fail. PayPal has been bad news for many years.
MSNBC article about their problems today: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6228586/
AND, a website I just discovered today (with a little help from a friend elsewhere) which looks like it lays it all out about PayPal:

RealNerd -- PayPal is right. It is only affecting some people -- the people actually selling something, and the people trying to use those debit cards.

I'm sure that my opinion here is going to be on the "un-popular" side, but in the 4+ years I've been using PayPal I have had excellent luck with them.
In addition using PayPal from a consumer's standpoint (I do my online and offline shopping with my PayPal debit card, I make all eBay purchases with PayPal, etc...), I also use PayPal for my business. I keep tabs on my finances every day through the web and PayPal, as I use PayPal to handle all subscriptions for my hosting customers. I've been doing this for years, and until today have never encountered an issue that could easily and almost immediately be resolved. I've had months where I run some very large numbers through PayPal, and it has worked out very well for me.
I've heard the rumors and read anti-paypal sites etc..., but all I can say is from experience, and in all the years I've been using PayPal for my business and as a consumer, none of my customers have ever conveyed dissatisfaction or problems with it, nor my friends, nor have I had any bad experiences. All that combined (cusomers, friends, family, myself) that equates to literrally hundreds of people I directly know who have had a positive experience for years with PayPal. What are the odds?
I assure you that I'm not some PR person from PayPal and that I'm not happy about the situation today - obviously my subscriber payments are not being processed today and nobody has been able to sign up for my hosting services because of this outage. It pretty much stinks and it's frustrating. But still, I'm not going to totally freak out on PayPal and start thinking there is some massive scam going on here. I can pretty much guaranteee you that they are not enjoying their server being down, it's costing them a lot of money just in technicians fixing the problem, let alone all the transactions they're not getting, and I'm willing to bet that the figure of $$ in my account is exactly what it's supposed to be when they get their servers back online.
PayPal has been a fantastic service for me, and while I agree that this lengthy outage is a major inconvenience, it has never happened to me over the many years I've been using them, and I can show them a little understanding when it comes to their web server problem that they're having today. It's not a happy experience, but I feel confident that they're definitely trying to resolve the issue as fast as possible and they're not out shopping with my cash LOL!
Of course, those are only my experiences and my opinions. Your mileage may vary. Will I be burned at a stake now?
