here eBay Merchandising Database

Question
This is really cool.
If you can't see it, it's because it's in the Supporting Members area. If you can, then check it out!
eBay Merchandising has always been something of a mystery to me. They don't explain what they are doing very well, but basically they run these promotions on the home page that draw views to certain searches when they are running the promotion. IF you have something that gets included in the search, it brings a BUNCH of hits to your item, and sales increase by quite a bit.
You can see what items they are promoting on the home page.
http://www.ebay.com/
So IF you go look at the home page, and then IF you figure out how to get your item included in the search, you can do real well. This is a big freaking hassle to do... but here has this database now to give advance notice of what is coming up with eBay Merchandising and then, once it comes out, the search words or category that is being highlighted is explained so that you don't have to figure it out yourself, you just have to list in those categories or using those terms in the title.
For instance, there is one called "What's Hot For Fall"
There are a bunch of different items being promoted. Among them is "Original Art" so if you are selling original art, you have this info:
Original Art
Search String: Original
To have your item included, use the following:
Title: Use the word Original in your title
Category: Home > All Categories > Art >
So instead of listing your art in the art category, put it in the promoted category and use the word "Original" in your title, and you get a bunch of hits and extra sales opportunities.
I'm selling a bunch of Halloween stuff, so I checked out the thread for that promotion.
Halloween
9/30 to 10/27
Costumes (Adult, Child, Baby, Pets, Accessories)
Collectibles
Home Décor
Right now, the info is incomplete, because the promotion doesn't start until 9/30 and the search terms haven't been added yet. I know to look back after the 30th, get the search terms, and then add those to my listings to get extra hits during the promotion.
Check it out, great resource. Thanks Crystal!

Answer
Thanks for posting this, Bobby. I was wondering what that little * O! * hoohoo was...

Answer
I had a few questions about this so I'm going to do things a bit different.
I want all sellers (ALL SELLERS ..reading this to send me a PM and I'll send you out a report thats current as of 9/14 (today)
If nothing else, you can see if any of your items that you are listing or will be listing can get some extra exposure ..
This does 2 things...
Any sellers can see how this is done and can benefit somewhere down the line themselves..Eventually, if you just take a few seconds, some item you have is going to be in that eBay merchandsing box (smile)
It makes it so I don't have to explain without a visual guide...
Now, if everyone who views does not request this..I'm gonna be really
I'll expect your PM shortly

Answer

Answer
I can weasel out of that request (demand) because I haven't listed anything in awhile so am not technically a 'seller'
but......do have a question about this.
Would it mostly be useful if you do have things that would fit those cats or that you could put there and take advantage of the timing?
Not particularly useful if you listed in them anyway, featured or not?

Answer
Barb..
These typically run about a month..The exception seems to be dated ones..(ie..top 10 of the week, or labor day sale)..and these go about 10 days.
Getting your item in there anytime is good..
You could look to see if anything you have listed applied..and make a minor change to have it included.
For example..one of them is SHOES..but they made an error and the only way it picks up the search is if a user has SHOE in their title..so a use could, if they had 4 extra spaces, edit their current title and add shoe..
as in..this is a pair of shoes (shoe)..
Another example..
There is a John Deere category but it only picks up items $50.00 or over..so if you have it for 45.00..you could actually raise your price..
These are for items listed.
For items NOT yet listed..
You could check the list to see if any of your items fit..and make sure you get all the exposure you can by following the criteria..
You could also, if you have a lot to list..pick stuff that you know will get picked up..
please tell me if this didnt' answer you questions..I read it and was a bit confused ..must be lack of coffee
crystal

Answer
short on coffee didn't seem to matter.
Yes, you answered my question.
And the nice thing I can say is, I hope many will benefit from it.
As a FORMER ebay artist I can only say .....well...no, I can't say that here.

Answer
This is several levels above what I'm working on right now as far as marketing sophistication so I'm going to pass on it for this month.
My first reaction was, with my items having an Irish theme, this won't apply to me other than maybe St. Patrick's Day.
After a couple of readings I realized that there is something in my inventory that could be included, with a little imagination applied, to almost every promotion. (Halloween - Irish Ghost Stories etc.)
It's as simple as saying to myself, if I'm going to list anyway why not include something that will get some free promotion.
Back to your efforts at hand and I'll try and catch up with you next month.

Answer

What is that, when did it start, where do you find info about this?
[added] Nevermind, I found the info. [/added]
