Loss of benefits

Question
Missouri
Can a company legally terminate you while out on disability. After my FMLA leave ran out, I received a letter saying I was now terminated and my insurance was cancelled as of that day. I received no warning. I am receiving disability right now, but no longer have medical coverage and cant afford cobra. Any suggestions?

Answer
Yes, a company can legally terminate you while you are on disability. Once your FMLA has run out, they have NO legal obligation to hold your job any longer. Nor have they any legal obligation to continue your insurance, barring the offering of COBRA.
While some states have a provision to provide longer coverage, Missouri is not one of them. So your employer has acted fully within the law, even though it works out badly for you.
Are you married and if so, does your spouse work? If your spouse has access to health insurance, you have 30 days from the cancellation of your own insurance to pick up theirs.
