Does law require insurance to cover 48 hrs after childbirth?

Question
What is the name of your state? WISCONSIN
We have an insurance plan where my girlfriend's old employer luckily covers 100% of prenatal and delivery costs. My question is, what does delivery legally consist of? Obviously, many mother stay in the hospital for 1-2 days after the actual birth. Are insurance companies required to cover this as well as part of the "delivery"? Or would this be seperate from delivery and only be covered if the insurance company pays for postpartum support? I read up a little on this but was not exactly clear**************

We acn't answer that as we have no idea who the carrier is, what their summary plan description says and what benefits are provided under the plan.

Answer
have your girlfriend ask her employer's insurance carrier. We acn't answer that as we have no idea who the carrier is, what their summary plan description says and what benefits are provided under the plan. Wrong. The Federal Newborns and Mother's Health Protections Act of 1996 mandates a minimum of 48 hours for vaginal delivery and 96 hours for cesarean delivery. This act applies to ALL group health plans regardless of how many participants that cover pregnancy. Became effective January 1, 1996 though enacted in 1996. Enforced by the US Department of Labor and surprisingly enough the Internal Revenue Service.
From this site:
There are also penalties for any group health plan that DOES NOT follow the federal law.

And, why are you still here? I figured the little one wouldn't make it past the weekend. My brithday is Monday...

Maybe a Super Bowl Baby! Mr. OG would bring the TV to the delivery room. Or steal one from the postpartum floor.

Answer
Mr. OG would bring the TV to the delivery room. Or steal one from the postpartum floor. that's not even funny, I did go into labor with you know who on Super bowl sunday. and they actually DID have a tv. there. Funny thing the doctor didn't show up until half time, and by the third quarter contractions stopped and we made it home for the end of the game.

And your experience is even funnier! Pretty damn hi-LAR-ious, if you ask me!

I wish I knew why I was hanging around with you folks still. I have literally been in early labor since last FRIDAY according to my doctors. I am still in labor but progressed to 3 cm dilated as of this morning and 60-65% effaced. They said MAYBE this weekend. I said the next time they send my butt to maternity ward I am not leaving until I can carry my child out in my arms.
This is the labor that never ends... it just goes on and on my friend...

Answer
Mr. OG would bring the TV to the delivery room. Or steal one from the postpartum floor. Actually Mr. OG is into NASCAR which means Daytona. And I will kill someone if I am still in labor THEN! My parents live near Punxsytawny, PA -- they think February 2 is a good day. I think ANY MINUTE NOW WOULD BE NICE!

Answer

HAHA! That is funny. And your experience is even funnier! Pretty damn hi-LAR-ious, if you ask me! NO NO NO NO NO. I will stage a labor-in at the maternity ward the next time I end up there!
