US or British law - how could you pay for SIX years and not know?
Answer
They had billed it in with my mortgage as my mortgage is with Britannia aswell
Answer
well, here in the united states, I would certainly be at least escalating my call to someone in a supervisory position, as here in the united states, I would feel that this was a billing error on the part of the mortgage company who should have ceased the insurance payment on the other home at the time I was no longer the property owner.
Answer
I'm going to write a letter explaining everything and take it in to Britannia and demand to see someone.
They actually told me on the phone that they could maybe get some of it back with a detailed letter on my part, but if thay can get some of it why not all of it?
I'll definately be doing everything i possibly can to sort this out.
I just wondered if anyone could give me any advice now as i'm going in tomorrow with my letter.

We can't give advice on British law. But here, in the united states , I would simply outline the dates of the property sale, new property and mortgage, research the insurance amounts and set out a total expected as a refund. Of course, that is if that happened to me here. LOL
Answer

Here, if your insurance was billed to your mortgage so many red flags would have gone up so that this wouldn't happen.
1. Your escrow account would have been short by the end of the first year, because they paid 2 insurance premiums instead of 1.
2. When you received your escrow statement, you would have noticed 2 payments instead of 1.
3. When you receive your insurance policy in the mail, the address of the property that is being insured is clearly listed on the declarations page.
4. This mistake would be chalked up to the homeowner, especially if the homeowner didn't call the insurance company to tell them to cancel the policy for whatever property address since the house was sold.
The bank just pays a bill. They could care less who they are paying or why.
