Question
What is the name of your state? RI
My widowed mother (58 yrs old) had to sell her house due to financial issues 6 months ago. She moved into my house with me and my family because she no other place to go. She is now very ill, does not have medical insurance, and her medical bills are quickly adding up. Could I be responsible for the outstanding medical bills after her death?
Answer
I will only post what I do know. Some places have an emergecy contact and also a person responsible for medical bills if someone is not able to pay them. In most cases, it is a spouse that will be responsible, but in your case, I am not sure. Do you claim to be responsible for your mother? if so, then you may be responsible for her bills.
Of course, take my advice with a grain of salt. You ask a very good question and look forward to the correct answer.
Answer
No, you will not be responsible for your mother's medical bills/debts. They are paid out of her estate - if she has no assets (estate), the creditors will get nothing.
Answer
However, she may qualify for Medicare due to disability or Medicaid due to financial situation...that may be able to help with the bills as long as she is still alive. Your state's Medicaid office would be a good place to start calling about this.
