Can my school enroll me in heathcare coverage without my consent?

Question
Hi, my name is Greg and I am from Maine. Basically my college, starting this semester, has begun enrolling all students in third party healthcare plans at a cost of 300 dollars per year.
If the student already has coverage, the burdon is on the student to contact that provider with proof that you already have coverage. They will then reverse the charge.
Is it legal for my school to automatically enroll every student without thier consent? Theby, leaving the burdon on the student to reverse the coverage?
Thanks

Answer
You may as well get used to it, because what you're describing is both legal and common. It's not going to change when you get out of school, either; a great many employers require proof of other coverage if you choose to waive their plan.
When you consider the potential liability on the school, or even just the cost of defending themselves from unjustified lawsuits if something should happen to you, requiring that you prove existing coverage is not out of line.
