Cancelling Insurance

Question
What is the name of your state? SC
At the company where I work they are telling us that we are not allowed to cancel our insurance policies until open enrollment which is a year away. Can they do this. I can't find any information on forced insurance.

Answer
Employer sponsored coverage can only be started, stopped, or changed either during the open enrollment period or within 30 days of a "qualifying life event" such as marriage, birth, starting or stopping a job (or spouse starting or stopping a job), etc. It's not forced insurance; you signed up for it, and had you read the plan information you would have known that you were obligated to stick with your choices to either accept or deny coverage until the next open enrollment period.

Answer
In other words, they not only CAN do this, they would be violating the law if they did anything else.
