Collection Agency

Question
What is the name of your state? FL
A collection agency is trying to collect from me $170.00 for an emergency room visit on January 2003 and $121.00 for an emergency room visit on May 2005. On 2003 I had a different health insurance than the one I have now.
They mentioned a lawsuit on our phone conversation. I was asking my self why they want to sue me for this amount of money?
1. What are my options for paying this collection agency?
2. By law, can I pay them $10 a month?
Thanks for your inputs.

Answer
Collection agencies like to make threats. They most likely have no intention of filing a lawsuit for that small amount of money.
I assume that you agree that you owe this money and it's not a case of your (former) insurance not paying when they were supposed to. So if that's the case, if you call the collections agency and ask if you can set up a payment plan, they will probably be willing to work with you (after all, otherwise they get nothing). I don't know if there's any LAW saying they have to let you pay it off gradually, but more then likely they will be willing to (though they may want more then $10 a month).
