If you lived in NC for over 10 years, still pay NC taxes, but now want to travel, how long can you be out of state and still retain residency for health insurance coverage? I asked my BCBS insurer that question 5 times, and received 5 different answers...does anyone know?

In my opinion, that may depend on the plan you are covered on. But you should be calling your state insurance commissioner for an answer, not your insurance carrier.

In that case, I would say it is situation and probably plan specific. If there were a carved-in-stone, across the board answer, the insurance commissioner would know it.
